I have been asked many tough
questions in my life, but the
three most memorable were: (1)
After I graduated from college
and passed the difficult Federal
Service Entrance Exam to
enter a trainee position in my
career field, I went before an
elite interview panel, used as
a further weeding out process.
The first question asked by
Mr. Hal Cotton, the highest
ranking civilian at the Warner
Robins Air Logistics Center,
was: “What measure would you
advocate to alleviate a reces¬
sion, a public works program
or a tax cut?” My study of eco¬
nomics in college allowed me to
provide a logical response. (2)
Once while briefing a roomful
of top military brass, a lieuten¬
ant general asked if the trend
line on the graph approached
the X-axis hyperbolically or
asymptotically. My knowl¬
edge of Analytical Geometry
helped me field the question
to the 3-star’s satisfaction. (3)
Once a Saudi-Arabian military
officer and I were discussing
our respective faiths, Islam and
Christianity. He asked if I could
supply proofs that Jesus arose
from the dead. •

The substance of my response
follows: It is a well-established
historical fact that Jesus Christ
was crucified in Jerusalem
circa 30 A.D., under Roman
Governor, Pontius Pilate, at the
urging of the Jewish Sanhedrin.
Compelling testimony of His
resurrection is recorded in
the four gospels, Acts, and
the Pauline epistles. Also, it
is documented in the secular
writings of historians such as
Josephus, Tacitus, Lucian, and
Maimonides.
Acts 1:3 states that Jesus
“presented himself alive to his
apostles after his suffering by
many infallible proofs, being
seen of them forty days, and
speaking of the things pertain¬
ing to the kingdom of God.”
In I Corinthians 15: 3-8, Paul
declares: “I delivered to you
what I also received: that Christ
died for our sins in accordance
with thei Scriptures, that he was
buried, that he was raised on
the third day in accordance
with the Scriptures, and that
he appeared to Cephas (Peter),
then to the twelve. Then he
appeared to more than five
hundred brothers at one time,
most of whom are still alive,
though some have fallen asleep.
Then he appeared to James,
then to all the apostles. Last of
all, he appeared also to me.”
TWenty years after the resur¬
rection, Paul is saying, “most
of the 500 eyewitnesses are still
alive; if you seek corroboration,
just ask them.”
Jesus made ten post-resurrec¬
tion appearances over a period
of 40 days. Among them were:
His appearance to a grieving
Mary Magdalene; His greet¬
ing of Joanna, the mother of
“Miki ” Elizabeth
United Methodist Church with
Rev. Ellis Carpenter and Rev.
James Hamlin officiating. Burial
followed in Oaklawn Cemetery.
The family greeted friends from
5 to 7 PM Sunday, April 5,2009,
in the sanctuary of Fort Valley
United Methodist Church. Born
to the late James Dawson and
TUla Parham Kendrick, Mrs.
Mathews was a lifelong resident

James, and Salome, who came
to anoint His body; walking
the road to Emmaus with
Clcopas and another follower;
allowing Thomas to touch His
nail-scarred hands and sword
pierced side; and partaking of
fish and bread with seven dis¬
ciples at Lake Tiberias.
The scripture states that,
accompanied by an earth¬
quake, an angel came down
from heaven and rolled away
the heavy stone. In great fear,
the Roman guards fled. They
were bribed with large sums
of money and told to say the
disciples came while they were
asleep and stole the body. When
Peter and John entered the tomb,
it was empty except for the
linen cloths used to wrap Jesus'
cadaverous body. The grave
clothes were lying crumpled,
similar to a glove in which the
hand had been removed. Where
was the body? If the authorities
had it, they would have paraded
Jesus’ corpse through the streets
of Jerusalem and in one fell
swoop killed Christianity in its
infancy. The once cowardly dis¬
ciples became roaring lions of
the faith, willing to place their
lives on the line to proclaim
Jesus’ resurrection. All were
martyred, except John. Paul
encountered the risen Lord on
the road to Damascus. He was
transformed from a persecutor
of Christians to a proclaimer
of the faith. The greatest proof
that Jesus arose is heard on
the lips of Christians who joy¬
fully sing: “You ask me how I
know He lives? He lives within
my heart... He walks with me
and talks with me along life’s
narrow way.”

Permissive Parenting Leads To
Kids Destructive Behaviors

QUESTION: You have
been very critical of behav¬
ioral scientists and other
writers who recommend a
more permissive approach to
child-rearing. Explain why
this concerns you. Why is it
ever wrong to be kind and
merciful to a boy or girl?
DR. DOBSON: The issue is
not one of kindness and mercy.
It is one of loving authority and
leadership at home, which is
in the child’s best interest. The
majority of books and seminars
since 1950 on child raising have
effectively stripped parents of
the ability to deal with willful
defiance when it occurs. First,
they haven’t admitted that such
behavior happens, and second,
they have given parents no tools
with which to confront it. This
bad advice has led to a type of
paralysis in dealing with kids.
In the absence of “permission”
to step in and lead, parents
were left with only their anger
and frustration in response to
defiant behavior.
Let me give an example from
a parenting text entitled “Your
Child from Ttoo to Five,” pub¬
lished during the permissive
1950s. In it was a bit of char¬
acteristic advice from that era,
paraphrased from the writings
of a Dr. Luther Woodward, as
follows:

My take it in your stride? Dr.
Woodward recommends a posi¬
tive policy of understanding
as the best and fastest way to
help a child outgrow this verinl
violence. When parents fully
realize that all little tots feel
angry and destructive at times,
they are better able to minimize
these outbursts. Once the pre¬
schooler gets rid of his hostility,
the desire to destroy is gone
and instinctive feelings of love
and affection have a chance to
sprout and grow. Once the child
is six or seven, parents can
rightly let the child know that
he is expected to be outgrowing
sassing his parents."
Having recommended
that passive approach, with
which I disagree strongly, Dr.
Woodward then told parents to
brace themselves for unjust criti¬
cism. He wrote, “But this policy
(of letting children engage in
defiance) takes a broad per¬
spective and a lot of compo¬
sure, especially when friends
and relatives voice disapproval
and warn that you are bringing
up a brat.”
In this case, your friends and
relatives will be right: You will
be bringing up a bratty kid —
and maybe a houseful of them!
Dr. Woodward’s recommenda¬
tion encourages parents to stand
passively through the formative
years when respect for author¬
ity can so easily be taught.
His philosophy is based on the
simplistic notion that children
will develop sweet and loving
attitudes if adults will permit
and encourage their temper tan-

According to the optimistic
Dr. Woodward, the lot who
has been calling his mother a
“big stinker" for six or seven
years can be expected to trans¬
form, like a butterfly emerging
from a cocoon, into a sweet
and loving seven-year-old. That
outcome is most improbable.
Dr. Woodward’s "policy of
understanding” (which means
“policy of permissiveness”)
leads directly to adolescent
rebellion in strong-willed chil¬
dren.

QUESTION: My wife has
been severely depressed for
nearly three months. What
kind of treatment or therapy
would you recommend for
her?
DR. DOBSON: Get her to a
physician, perhaps a psychia¬
trist or internist, as soon as pos¬
sible. This kind of prolonged
depression can have serious
medical and psychological
consequences, yet it is usually
very responsive to treatment.
Antidepressant drugs are effec¬
tive in controlling most cases
of depression. She could also
be entering menopause and
may need estrogen replacement
therapy or some other hormone
treatment.
Of course, medication will not
correct an emotional problem,
if that is what underlies her
depression. She may need to
talk to a psychologist or a coun¬
selor after you have approached
the problem from a medical per¬
spective. The important thing is
to get going. Depression should
not be permitted to continue
unchecked.
