How many kinds of watermelon can
you name?
What, you mean there’s more to
watermelons than “little round ones”
and "big oval ones"? „. ^ .
If you stopped by the Farmer’s Fest
at the Downtown Farmer’s Market in
Fort Valley, you could have gotten a
lesson in watermelons, not to mention
some good deals on that sweet, juicy
staple of summer in the South.
Sam and Cliff Hines of Vienna
had their diverse varieties of Citrullus
lanatus (family Cucurbitaceae) on dis¬
play last Friday afternoon. The round,
dark, nearly stripeless Sugar Baby was
stacked high, with a freshly halved
sample perched on top to tempt the
thirsty shopper. Next to it was the
Moon Glow, instantly recognizable by
its yellow flesh. Also piled high were
the Sangria and the Candy Sweet.
According to the brothers Hines, the
Sugar Baby and the Candy Sweet
are seedless, while the other two are
known as pollinators. The Sangria
and the Candy Sweet stand out for

Next to the Hines brothers, former
County Commissioner James Khoury
stopped by Edward Kendrick's stand
to inspect some plump, crimson toma¬
toes. Kendrick, a Fort Valley fanner,
had tx*fe»d a n d g reen tomatoes avail¬
able, along with cucumbers, pepper
sauce in elegant bottles and water¬
melons.
Despite the abundant watermelons
on display that day, the year has been
a tough one for watermelon growers,
Kendrick said. While some areas are
producing a good crop, the drought
has hit many growers hard. As the
name suggests, the watermelon is 70%
to 80% water, and low rainfall can
inhibit the fruit’s quality or even keep
it from growing at all.
Next to Kendrick, Dee Rouse of
Fort Valley had baskets of particu¬
larly vivid red tomatoes, along with
honeydew melons, cantaloupes, com,
bell peppers, snap peas, peaches and
squash.
Nearby, Gary and Shannon Cochran
and Gary Jr. were displaying fruit bou¬

At the other end of the covered mar¬

putting peaches in a dehydrator. He
said he makes his product in a room at
his Fort Valley home set aside for that
purpose and government inspected.
Next to Holloway, Latasha Robinson
from Macon was chatting with Judge
Varner and Dave Plant. Robinson
