Data gathered by The Leader
Tribune from public sources shows
the salary of recently retired School
Superintendent Susan Clark was eas¬
ily the highest among school districts
in counties similar in size to Peach
County. Please see the accompanying
chart for more details.
This report includes counties with
a population between 25.000 and
35,000 as reported in the 2010 Census.
Twenty-three Georgia counties,
including Peach, fell in that range, in
addition, the nearby counties of Bibb,
Crawford, Houston, Macon and Taylor
were included.
Dr. Clark’s pay, which included
base salary and a benefits package,
was S186 J070 throughout her tenure
in Peach County. That was about
$16,000 higher than the 2010 salary
of the Oconee County Superintendent,
the second highest among similar
counties. It was nearly S70JXX) high¬
er than the lowest 2010 salary in
the rangjb: $116,946 for the Tattnall
County Superintendent.

was $198,000. while the Houston
Superintendent earned $188,048.
Bibb’s enrollment was 24,435 and
Houston’s was 27,014, compared to
Peach’s enrollment of 3.926. Bibb’s
enrollment is roughly six times higher
than Peach’s, while Houston’s is more
than seven times higher. Bibb’s 2010
budget was about $250 million and
Houston’s was about $269 million.
The school districts studied for this
report show no visible patterns. Fast¬
growing Bryan County, with 7,621
students, has about three times the
enrollment of Chattooga County,
yet the salaries of the two districts'
superintendents are within $2,000
of each other. The Jones County
Superintendent makes just $90 more
than the Hart County Superintendent,
even though Jones has about 1.200
more students. The Peach superinten¬
dent’s salary was highest, while the
school system's enrollment was 14th,
or roughly in the middle. The Tattnall
superintendent's salary was the lowest,
while the district’s enrollment of 3.597
was close to Peach’s 3,926.
Any discussion of superintendent
salaries should consider the many fac¬
tors that affect those amounts aside
from population and enrollment.
