Evidence is increasing in
Peach County for the gradual
disappearance of a particularly
noxious species of pest, which,
if it had an official name,
would be called Lecticu -
or litter bug.
Keep Peach County Clean
& Beautiful has announced a
significant improvement in the
overall amount of litter in the
county. Peach County’s Litter
Index fell from 2.04 in 2010 to
1.74 in 2011, according to Jann
Culpepper, Executive Director
of KPCC&B.
The Litter Index is a visual
measure of the amount of litter
in an area over a five-year
period. Volunteers gather the
information to report the local
Litter Index, reporting of which
is a membership requirement
of the national Keep America
Beautiful program. A score
of l means “little or no litter;”
2 means “slightly littered;” 3

“extremely littered.”
The drop to a lower level “is
a great improvement for Peach
County,” according to a written
statement from Culpepper.
“Keep up the good work, Peach
County citizens - Help Stop
Littering!”
Aside from keeping unwant¬
ed stuff off the roads and
grounds, local citizens have
been doing a lot more recy¬
cling, thanks in part to con¬
tinuing education efforts from
KPCC&B. In fiscal 2010 (Oct.
I. 2009 to Sept. 30. 20I0), the
county recycled 417.45 tons of
stuff, or more than 834,000
pounds. For fiscal 2011. the
total increased to 427.68 tons,
or over 854,000 pounds, an
increase of I0.23 tons, or over
20,000 pounds in a year.
According to the printed
statement, all those tons of
recycling saved the county over
$10,000 in tipping fees (the
charge for dumping materials

at a landfill) plus fuel costs.
KPCC&B offers cardboard
pick-up free of charge to 38
schools and businesses in the
county. Sales of the cardboard
bring money into the county
and preserve landfill space,
according to the statement.
“KPCC&B is fortu¬
nate to have the support of
our Peach County Board of
Commissioners in the the fact
that there are two recycling
facilities in Peach County to
better serve the community,”
says the statement.
Both locations are open
around the clock. The Byron
recycling center is at Church
Street and Jailhouse Alley.
The Fort Valley center is at
508 Old Macon Road, behind
Blue Bird and just past Peach
County Public Works.
With a good effort, this could
the year that L. bug disappears
from Peach County.
