Why Muslims Pray Toward Mecca

By Billy Powell
Every day millions of
Muslims turn toward Mecca,
Saudi Arabia, and pray. They
are required to pray five times
a day - at daybreak, noon, mid¬
afternoon, sunset and evening.
Their prayers are said in Arabic
even if it’s not their native
tongue. The prayer is begun
by saying “Allahu akbar” or
“God is great” followed by rec¬
itation of the first seven verses
of Chapter 1 of the Koran.
Before a prayer can be uttered.
Muslims must undergo a ritual
cleansing to ensure they are
both physically and spiritually
pure before going before Allah.
There is little furniture inside a
mosque because Muslims use
prayer mats. Women do not
pray in the same place as men.
There is usually a screened off
area for them. Islamic prayer
begins in a standing position
and moves through several

Mecca is the birthplace of
Muhammad (570-632 A.D.). the
founder of the Islamic faith.
Muhammad claimed the angel
Gabriel appeared to him and
called him to be a prophet and to
proclaim God’s message. It was
in Mecca where Muhammad
received divine revelations over
a period of years from the angel
Gabriel. After Mohammad's
death, these recorded revela¬
tions were incorporated in the
Muslim Holy Book, called the
Koran. The Koran comprises
114 chapters and is shorter than
the New Testament. Muslims
consider the Koran to be the
words of God Himself.
At the center of the Great
Mosque at Mecca is a small,
cube-shaped, granite structure,
measuring roughly 40 x 40 x 40
ft, called the Kaaba. Muslims
believe the Kaaba was first built
by Abraham and Ishmael. Inside
the Kaaba’s southeast corner
is the sacred “Black Stone.”
Islamic tradition holds that it
fell from Heaven to show Adam
and Eve where to build an altar.

Should I Believe The Birth of Christ?

The process of natural birth
happens according to God’s
natural law (Genesis 1:27-28;
4:1). However, the birth of
Christ did not happen accord¬
ing to God's natural law! The
ordinary procedure of a man
and woman coming together
“to know" one another did not
take place between Joseph and
Mary before the birth of Jesus,
The conceiving of Mary's child
was beyond God’s natural
law, Jesus was conceived in
and born of a virgin to fulfill
what was spoken of the Lord
by the prophet (Isaiah 7:14).
Luke 1:30-34 reveals the angel's
message to Mary when she is
told “...thou shall conceive in
thy womb, and bring forth a son,
and shall call his name JESUS. •V
During this conversation Mary
herself states “How shall this
be, seeing 1 know not a man?”
Hundreds of years before
this remarkable event occurred,
prophesy had established the
supernatural and miraculous
manner of the Saviour's birth.
The prophet Isaiah had proph¬
esied, “...Behold, a virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son, and
shall call his name Immanuel."
This was an eye-opening proph¬
esy. The unique manner of His
Many believe it’s a meteorite.
The exterior of the Kaaba is
covered with a black silk cloth
embroidered in gold with verses
from the Koran. Considered
the holiest place on earth, all
Muslims must face in the direc¬
tion of the Kaaba during their
prayers. The direction Muslims
must face is called the “Qibla.”
The “Qibla" in North America
is to the northeast, ranging from
56.3 degrees for Washington,
D.C., to 23.7 degrees for Los
Angeles.
Muhammad reportedly took
a miraculous night journey with
the angel Gabriel riding on a
winged horse. They first visited
the “al-Haram ash-Sharif
Mosque" in Jerusalem (Islam’s
third holiest place) and then
toured heaven and hell, where
they spoke with Abraham,
Moses, and Jesus.
How radically different
arc the burial facts of Islam’s
Muhammad contrasted to
those of Christianity’s Jesus.
Muhammad's remains are
decaying in a guarded crypt in
Medina, Saudi Arabia (Islam's
second holiest place), located
some 200 miles north of Mecca.
In contrast. Jesus' remains won't
be found anywhere on earth.
For it was from an empty tomb
that the angel of the Lord pro¬
claimed, “He is not here. He is
risen!”

entrance into the world should
show anyone interested in the
birth of the Son of God that
this was to be an exceptional
fact; that no other on earth, or
in heaven, ever has been or ever
shall be like Him! Being related
to the Father, he was/is deity,
but having a human mother.
He was to have close relations
to mankind. Like the Father,
His existence is eternal. Like
man. He would experience all
the trials and temptations that
man faces. Jesus left the joys of
heaven and after being born of
woman he experienced all the
problems and joys of being a
man. It is not surprising that He
would come into the world by
being born of a virgin.
Before Mary and Joseph
“came together,” she was found
to be with child of the Holy
Spirit (Matt. 1:18). By Jewish
law Joseph could have broken
his betrothal agreement with
Mary if she had been unfaith¬
ful to him. The angel of God
appeared to Joseph and encour¬
aged him to take Mary as his
wife, explaining that the child
she had conceived was from
the Holy Spirit (Matt 1:20-
21). Under the inspiration of
the Holy Spirit. Matthew speaks
of that prophecy in Isaiah 7.
Matthew also records that the
virgin birth of Jesus w as done to
fulfill that prophesy. Matthew
further recorded that Mary was
not “known” by Joseph until
after the birth of her firstborn
son, Jesus (Matt. U25).
Surely, no theme is more
worthy of our constant and
profound consideration than
the truth of the virgin concep¬
tion and birth of Jesus Christ.
Because this truth may be
beyond the acceptance and
understanding of some today,
they attempt to destroy all that
God has in store for those who
would obey and follow Christ.
The Bible quite clearly sets forth
the record that Jesus was con¬
ceived in and born by a virgin.
In Isaiah 7:14 we have recorded
the prophesy and in Matthew
1:18-25 the fulfillment of the
Lord's virgin birth for us by
God in His written word, the
Bible.
