To Restore Silverware.
When silverware is not tarnished
too badly by the sulphuretted hydro
gen in the air, it can readily be re
stored with the following composition:
Cream of tnrtnr, one part; powdered
alnm, one part; washed chalk, one
part. Stir a sufficient quantity of this
powder in clenn water to make a me
dium thin paste, with whioh brush the
object requiring the restoration.
Should the silverware be tarnished
essentially, it must be plunged for a
moment in either a boiling bath of
hydrochloric acid or manganate of
potassa.

Three Women Believed of Female
Troubles by Mrs. Pinkham.
From Mrs. A. W. Smith, 50 Summer
St., Biddeford, Me.:
“For several years I suffered with
various diseases peculiar to my sex.
Was troubled with a burning sensation
across the small of my back, that all-
gone feeling, was despondent, fretful
and discouraged; the least exertion
tired me. I tried several doctors but
received little benefit. At last I de
cided to give your Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound a trial. The ef
fect of the first bottle was magical.
Those symptoms of weakness that I
was afflicted with, vanished like vapor
before the sun. I cannot speak too
highly of your valuable remedy. It is
truly a boon to woman.”
From Mrs. Melissa Phillips, Lex
ington, Ind., to Mrs. Pinkham:
“Before I began taking your medicine
I had suffered for two years with that
tired feeling, headache, backache, noap-
petite, and a run-down condition of the
system. I could not walk across the
room. I have taken four bottles of the
Vegetable Compound, one box of Liver
Pills and used one package of Sanative
Wash, and now feel like a new woman,
and am able to do my work.”
From Mrs. Mollie E. Herrei., Pow
ell Station, Tenn.:
“For three years I suffered with such a
weakness of tho back, I could not
perform my household duties. I also
had falling of the womb, terrible bear
ing-down pains and headache. I have
taken two bottles of Lydia E. Pink-
ham's Vegetable Compound and feel
like a new woman. I recommend your
medicine to every woman I know.”

Lam! Plaster on Potatoes.
The first application of Pari* green
to potatoes to kill the potato boetle
should be with laud plaster. A table
spoonful toa half bushel of the plaster
thoroughly mixed will be strong
enough. Not only will the poison kill
the potato larva*, but the effect of the
plaster will be to make tho vines grow
Btrongor and cause more copious dew
on the leaves, which will destroy many
potato beetles’ eggs.
Sprouting rotator* llj tlir Sun.
The practiee of sprouting seed pota
toes in suulight is nu oid one and
ranked by many with tho old method
of planting “by the light of tho moon”
ns pure superstition, but tho fact re-
maius that repeated tests by reliable
growers have demonstrated that there
is something in tho plnu, and that at
least it is worthy of trial. The idea is
to spread out ou tho floor of tho burn,
whore they will get the full suulight
but not the direct rays of the suu, the
seed potatoes, to keep them there un
til the sprouts are uu inch long, then
planting at ouoe. The sun-sprouted
tubers forced, plants through the
ground soouer and tho Btalks are
stronger thnu with seed not so treated.
The one grent point in favor of the
plan is that situ-sprouted potatoes are
entirely free from scab. Why this is
so must be left to our scientific men
to answer, hut it would seem ns if tho
exposure to the suu in some way de
stroys the germs of the disease.
a Mottles In llutteiy
One of the small troubles dairymeu
have to meet is known as mottles, and
is caused mainly by the use of too cold
w»tor in washing tho butter and by
the manner in whieh it is introduced
into the churn. By tho use of water
too oold, the outside of the butter
granules becomes hardened while tho
inside is soft and remains so despite
working or tempering with salt, leav
ing the fine thread-like streakB in the
butter that are so objectionable. The
water should be introduced into tho
churn Blowly and should bo tempered
to nenrly the temperature of the churn.
The usual method of introducing cold
water into a churn foroibly, through a
hose or pipe, is responsible for, the
largo mottles, which are caused by the
water striking tho granules of butter
nud causing them to turn too hard to
break up. These are comparatively
small things, bnt large onough to fre
quently spoil tho Halo of butter or to
materially reduce the price obtained.

Use of Electricity in Agriculture.
Milton Whitucy, ohief of the divis
ion of soils of tho department of agri
culture, in his annual report to the
secretary says: “Theelectrical method
of moisture determination has been
still further perfected. Sixteen sta
tions have been equipped with oloc-
trioal instruments in various parts of
the country, and in several important
typos of soil. Records have been kept
at those stations for periods varying
from two to four mouths, and it has
been found that the mothod cau be
used by auy olio with ordinary care.
As a result of these field records, I
feel perfectly satisfied with the opera
tions of the method, and equklly sat
isfied that it will prove of great value
in soil investigations, as well as of
practical and commercial value. One
great value of the method is that the
electrodes are permanently buried in
the field, at any depth desired, and
the field can be cultivated or cropped
os usual. The electrical resistance
between the electrodes is read from a
scale, and this resistance varies ac
cording to the iquave of the water
contents. By once thoroughly stan
dardizing the electrodes and by the
URe of tables furnished by the divis
ion, the moisture contents of the soil
cau be determined at auy time from
the electrical resistance of the soil.”
Barrel Strawberry Culture.
Probably many readers have heard
of the plan of raising strawberries on
the outside of a
barrel. If one lms
only a small city
or village lot, or
“back yard,” the
experiment is well
worth trying. Tho
accompanying il
lustration shows
one or two wrin
kles that may help
mako the experi-
ment a success.
NOVEL WAY TO RAISE First bore the
berries. holes all about tbe
barrel, then put inside a drain pipe
made of four strips of board, reaching
from the top to the bottom. The
joints should not be tight. Now fill
in earth about the pipe and set out
the strawberry plants in nil the holes
and over the top. Put the barrel on
a bit of plank on the bottom of which
wide castors have been screwed. The
barrel cau then be turned about every
few days to bring the sun to all the
plants. An ordinary flour barrel will
answer very well for trying this in
teresting experiment. —American Ag
riculturist.
Bedding Out Plants.
Toward tlie end of May, in an or-
dinary season, tbe danger of late frosts
is over, and the first real warm days
of early summer are at hand. It is
well now to get all plants, so far as
possible, out of doors rather than
keep them in the house. Put ail

in a‘good location. Large specimen
plants, whether in large pots o» tubs,
do better when either sot ou the lawn
under the troes or partinlly plunged
