RETIRED—THE OLD YEAR.
The old year is a soldier bravo,
Whose march is ended now;
Ilis cloak is reyt with wind and
storm,
Their scars are on his brow,
lie started out, a slender boy
AV itli youthful fervor fired,
But that was twelve loog months
ag‘>>
A id now lie is retired.
The frost is white upon his beard,
The snow is on his head;
He wore a plume of daffodils—
The daffodils are dead.
The eagle eye. the fearless step,
The graces we admire
Are far behind him on the road—
The old year is retired.
The new year came a young re
cruit
At midnight’s silver chime,
And fell in line to shoulder arms
And march with Father Time.
Oar true and faithful comrade’s
term
Of service has expired.
Ealute him as he pusses out—
The veteran is retired.

' If I could have my way there
would never be another school

enough to attract, every child

At least so much should he done
to break the endless monotony of

soul through the singing of the
multitude and the magnetic touch
of the words that are spoken in
the crowd.—Andrew S. Draper.

What Lemons Will Do.
These are some of the things
lemone can do for you:
Squeezed into a glass of water
every morning and drank, it will
keep your stomach in the best of
order, and will never let dyspep
sia get into it.
If you have dark hair and it seems
to he falling out, rub a slice of
lemon on j qur scalp and it will
stop that little trouble promptly.
Squeezed into a quart of milk, it
will give you u mixture to rub on
your face night and morning,
and give you a complexion like a
princess’s.
If you have a bad headache,
rub slices of lemon along the tem
ple. The pain will not bo long in
disappearing, or at least in grow
ing easier to bear.
If a bee or insect sting you, plit
a Tew drops of lemon juice on the
spot.
If you have a troublesome corn
rub it with lemon after taking p
hot bath, and cut away the corn.
Besides all this, it is always
ready for 1 lie preparation of old-
fashioned lemonade. Altogeth
er, the lemon is an article few can
afford to got along without,—
Health.
BLOOD.
We live by our blood, nnd on it. We
thrive or starve, ns our blood is rich or
pot r.
I here is nothing else to live on or by.
When strength is ful' nnd spirits high,
we ire being refreshed, bone, muscle unu
brnyi, in body and mind, with continual
flow of rich blood.
This is health.
Wbeu weak, in low spirits, no cheer,
uo spring, when rest is not rest and sleep
is not sleep, we arofetarved; our blood is
poor; there is little, nutriment* in it.
Back of tho^blood, is food, to keep the
•ilooiI rich. When it fails, take Scott’s
Unubiiou of cod-liver oil. It sets the
w lioli body going again—man woman and
child.

Christmas passed off very
quietly. Every day appeared
like Sunday. However, all
seem to have had a pleasant
time.
There were services at the
church on Christmas day. Revs.
Nunn, Hicks and Rainier preach
ed good sermons. The congrega
tion was large and appreciative.
Mr. Dock Fuller and Miss Lau
rie Lawler, we learn, were united
in holy bonds of Matrimony Sun
day, Esq. B. II. Owen officia

complished and have many
friends who extend to them
their best wishes.
We lean that there will be
other weddingsro report in the
near future.
Everything here tends toward
matrimony. If any of the read
ers are so enclined, Nebo is the
place for them; there are chances
for others. '
Mrs. Nannie Gable and two
daughters, Misses Bessie and
Maggie, have returned from a
visit, of several days to relatives
in Douglas county.
While Mr. and Mrs. J. A.
Cohen were visiting relatives
near Sweetwater some scoundrel
stole about two hundred pounds
of meat from them. No clue.
There will be rascals, liars and
thieves for a long time yet.

In married life sentiment can
worry along without dollars, but
dollars must have sentiment., too.
It’s funny how people worry
about the terrihlo waste of mon
ey in supporting a navy and
don’t fret about ten times as
much drunk up in rum.
When a woman gets it into her
head that she is mentally supe
rior to all her family it is time
for her to take a course at learn
ing how to run a house.
Now the iceman is up against
a gapie of freeze-out.

In the race of life it isn’t the
fast man who comes out ahead.'
Money tulks-but. during the

If the truth is mighty and will
prevail it slioud show more signs
of becoming prevalent.
Counterfeiters are not very par

are satisfied if it is passable.

Horsepower Measurement.
A horsepower is the force re
quired to lift a dead weight of
33,000 pounds one foot a minute.
To find the' horsepower of an en
gine, multiply the area of the piston
in inches by the average steam pres
sure in pounds per square inch. Mul
tiply the product by the travel of
the piston in feet per minute and
divide that product by 33.000. If
an engine is rated at seventy-three
horsepower, it will raise "33,000
pounds one foot seventy-three times
in one minute.
Birds of Iceland. ,
The binMnunn of Iceland is cred
ited with 103 species. Of these
three are residents, twenty-seven
su»mer migrants, twenty-one oc
casional visitors and eighteen rare
stragglers. The land birds are few.
including only seven residents and
five that come it} summer to breed.
The great auk once resorted to the
island, but the most interesting
birds now probably are the northern
wren, the great northern dive nnd
the Iceland falcon. Singing birds
are few.
