times from too much of his own dis

biography, issued in 1855, was not
meant to be taken as literal truth,
but it was so taken, and the criticism
of it was very bitter. The soberer
matter of fact public of that day
did not see the Pickwickian sense
and the orientalism of stutement
that pervaded it. The cold type
could not carry with it the twinkling
of the author’s eye.
The three things, however, which
brought upon him the sharpest crit
icism were the three curiosities of
his show which were called Joyce
Hath, the Woolly Horse, and the
Fee Gee Mermaid. The first of
these was said to bo Washington’s

Fashion Hints For Winter.
The shirt-waist costume is es
sential to a perfectly appointed
wardrobe, and velveteen ot good
quality is desirable for its de
velopment.
Gape collars distinguish nearly
all the new coats and jackets.
Velvet has been the material
par excellent of the season, and
ir will undoubtedly continue in
favor.
The cloth costume will be a
prominent feature of the Spring
fashion, and white mohair with
a silky surface is promised an
1111 precedent reign.
Grepo de Chine is the most
artistic material for evening
gowns or those intended for
semi-formal occasions; but many
of the evening dresses are made
of chiffon and lace, and show
narrow borders of fur, chinchilla
or milk tail.
Lace becomes more and more
a feasnre of fashionable dress,
and leather lias an important po
sition in trimmings this season.

Both Thought Alike.
Jones and Smith were two old
bachelors who lived on tho most in
timate terms, constantly dined to
gether and smoked the peaceful pipe
and occasionally went off to
gether for a week’s holiday by the
sea. But a chungc came over the
Bpirit of Smith’s dream. Well on in
the fifties lie got married, and on
liis return from the honeymoon in
vited Jones to come and dine witif
him and he a witness of his happi
ness.
ft The dinner over, the old friends
eat down in front of the fire after
Mrs. Smith had gone upstairs.
“Well, my dear Jones,’’ said Ben
edict. “now tell me quite candidly
what do you think of my dear wife?”
Jones hesitated for a moment,
then replied:
“Well, Smith, if I must speak
quite candidly, I don’t think much
of her.”
Smith patted him on his knee as
ho replied confidentially:
“Neither do I, my dear Jones.”

letter from George Washington to

runs ns follows:

In the world’s estimation the
seat of wisdom is in the mouth
rather than in the mind. A close
mouthed dullard oftens appears
as a philosopher, while a talka
tive philosopher passes for a
fool; consequently a lack of
brains and confused and unwise
notions do not. popularly consti
tute a man a fool; it takes tiiper-
sistant utterance of those notions
to do that.

She Was So Pleasant!
Oliver Wendell Holmes related a
little incident us occurring in Ids
own life which had no little effect on
him.
“Many years ago,” he snid, “in
walking among the graves at Mount
Auburn, I came upon a plain, white
marble slab which bore an epitaph
of only four words, but to my mind
they meant more than any of tin?
labored descriptions on other monu
ments : ‘She was bo pleasant.’ That
one note revealed the music of a life
of which I knew nothing more.”
