Columbus citizens whocontrib
uted to the fund that has been
started to erect a monument to
Bragg Smith, the negro who lost
his own life in an effort to save
that of Superintendent of Public
Works K. L. Johnson will join
in appreciation of a noble deed.
The movement should he all the
more popular for the reason that
it was a black man who gave up
his life for a white man. Such a
deed comes like the sweetness of
peace to prove that there is not
hatred between the races, and
that the regard of the black man
for the white that marked the
negro race in days that are storied

the property actually does be
long to him.

to think otherwise, however, the
articles, o f ten valuable, are held
indefinitely or until it is certain
that they will never be claimed
by their rightful owners, when
the stuff is finnlly disposed of
and the proceeds bunded over to
benefit one or another of the va
rious police funds.
