If it took Mr, Bristow i,-

whole library to describe the
land frauds in the interior de

The treasury statement
which shows condition at the
close of the first four months
of the fiscal year, exhibits a
striking contrast of the state
ment of last year. There was
then a surplus of $18,000,000
and now the surplus is almost
eliminated. What will Sec-
retar)- Shaw do next to help
the banks?
NEW LAW ON POSTINO LAND.
There Ims been a big change
in the law relative to the posting
of land.
The gencaal assembly et its
last session materially changed
the law relative lo posting land,
marking it easier to post land
against, hunters or fisherman.
Under the law the county com
missioners of each comity must
furnish the clerk of the superior
court, a register for the use ot I
those who desire to post, their
land. The land owner must first
put up two notices on his land,
calling attention to the fact that
hunting and fishing ib prohibit,
ed. He then calls upon the clerk
of the court and registers his
land, giving a full description of
it. From aud after that date it
will he unlawful ‘or any person
to hunt, with dogs, firearms or in
any other way upon such land,
inclosed or not inclosed, or to
fish with hooks, net, seine or in
any other way in any stream, lake
pond or lagoon on such land.
The law provides that if such
notices as are posted become de
stroyed or defaced this shall not
because for defense.
The law also provides that
when tax receivers of the state
begin making their rounds they
shall carry the register with them
and shall register persons who
desire to post their lands. Ex
cept when the tax receivers are
on their rounds with the register
in shall be kept in the office of
the clerk of the superior court.
For registering those who desire
to post their land the clerk or
tax receiver, as the case many
be, is entitled to a fee of 25 cents
for eacli person registering.
It is believed that the new law
will prove to be very popular
with land owners.

“And how did vou like the

laughing, after the usual congrat
ulations.
“Ah, ha!” returned the China
man, with a cunning leer, “me

Me put cakee in fire. Burn him
up. He, he!”
“Oil, tli it’s too bad!” said the
Englishman, ver\ much hurt.
“You might have tasted it at
least, out. of compliment to my
wife and myself. Why didn’t
you?”
“Me too elute, Hah,” said the
Celestial, with the same cunning
smile. “You owe me monee,

Eight schools in an Ohio coun
ty were unable to secure teach
ers this fall because the young
men qualified to teach had gone
to Springfield to work for better
pay as motormen or conductors
on the street cars. A school su
perintendent in that county said,
in discussing the situation, that
the poorest workman on the
streets [received as good wages
as the average school teachers.
These facts carry their own com
ment, and make it so clear that
no school trustee need be in
doubt of their significance.—

Not Practical.
Superintendent of Schools
Schaeffer, at Wilkesbarree, ut
tered words of wisdom a day or
two ago when, criticising tho
trend of modern school systems,
he said: “Teachers often dwell
on the subject of nature, describ-
ing vividly o the child the whale
and the oriole,without first teach
ing the fundamentals of earjv
education. It is not the knowl
edge of a whale or an oriole that
the people need, but the power
to read and write.” It seems to
us that the fault in connection
with the “w.hale and oriole”
style of teaching is not so much
with the teachers as with legis-
tures and school boards that make
obligatory the giving of instruc
tions in a lot of useless stuff. In
our own schools we have studies
that are not approved of by the
best educators—“whale ai d ori
ole” studies, so to sneak—that
were forced on the teachers and
children by the legislature fo.-
plcase certain cranks and so-call
ed reformers. If all of the fads,
all ot the whales and orioles, were
cut out of the common schools it
would be to the great advantage
of all concerned.—Savannah
