“Hope Saw a Star.”
Mr. Editor :.
I have just finished reading
those interesting letters in this
week’s issue of The New Era.
After reading ijlie one penned by
the dexterous ! hand of “Radius
Vector” a thrill of ectsacy came
upon me and I could not refrain
from saying: Paulding county
“Bravo,” but after a moments re
flection a gloom of melancholy
crept upon me when I remem
bered that only two of the five
with whom I am personally ac
({uainted have been teaching in
their home county recently, and
that my esteemed friend “Radi
us Vector” is among those who
have been teaching in other coun
ties.
Gradually, the gloom passed
away and “Hope saw a star.” In
my imagination I could seb those
nine worthy and energetic young
men and women, after three or
four years of Jhard study, leave
the Normal school with their di
plomas that they had justly earn
ed and come back to their native
county and there give their time
and talent in develooing the
* minds of Paulding’s sons and
daughters. I could see “Radius
Vector” (a young man of whom
Paulding county should bo proud)
establish a much needed indus-,
trial school. I could hear the
merry laughter of the boys and
girls as they were being hauled
over Paulding’s piked roads. I
saw those lassies, whose cheeks
had robbed the rose of it’s blush
es, bound from the wagons with
the elasticity of the antelope. I
went into their school and saw
the inmate cull the flowers from
the broad fields of botany, and
observed that there was nothing
which so filled their minds with
delight as the sublime resean li
es of astronomy. They loved to
contemplate the harmony and
beauty of the planetary system
and to soar still fnther on the
wings of ^thought into the vast
and illimitable firmament where
each twinkling luminary is it
self a center of a similar system.
They watched the fiery and ec
centric track of the comet,brand
ishing its crystal tresses in the
sky, and from all the wonderful
movements and harmonious ac
tion of the heavenly bodies they
realized the impressive senti
ment of Young, that
“An umlevout astronomer la miul.”
From the marvelous works of
creation as revealed in that most
sublime of all human sciences,
their souls were transported to
the Creator himself, whom they
worshiped in adorning humility.
The boys worked twelve hours a
week on the farm and in the ma
chine shop and the girls were
taught the science of cooking,
sewing and painting. Two hours
a day were spent in teaching vo
cal music, one hour in teaching
the “new work” and one in
teaching the “Old Harp” (for
the sake of harmony.)
The County Board of Educa
tion met semi-weekly for the
purpose of consolidating the
school districts aiid building mod
ern school houses. They recom
mended that, owing to the fre
quency of their gathering togatli-
er that they be paid one dollar
per day instead of two dollars,
also that the surplus money be

used in paying for painting the
new school houses. Before ad
journment they passed the fol
lowing resolutions: Resolved,
that we, the County Board of
Education of Paulding county,
do hereby declare that we will
not contract with any teacher
Who is not a college graduate and
who does not hold a flrst-gride
certificate.
Mr. Editor, will our school sys
tem undergo^ the miraculous
change or shall “Radius Vector”
and the “Observer” awake to
realize that, they have been idly
dreaming and that the public
school system of Georgia will
continue to run in the same old
rut lor the next quarter of a cen
tury? Observer.
