A rich and almost inexhausti
ble vein of hard coal has recent
ly been discovered in the state of
Washington.
The state department has been
advised by Consul-General Den-
bv at Shanghai, China, of the
destruction of the American
Presbyterian school property as
a result of tax riots in northern
Chekiang, China.
Mount Vesuvius continues to
throw out ashes and incandes
cent matter from its chief crater,
the tone of which formed by last
eruption, collapsed recently, the
earth’s tremblings ^being felt for
a long distance.
Secretary of the Treasury Oor-
telvnu has resigned, recording to
a Washington dispatch. The
story current is that the presi
deucy of the Knickerbocker Trust
Company of New York has been
ofTored to him and that he has
accepted.
The Farmers' National Union
lias declared with practical una
nimity for a parcels post, and is
moving with customary prompt
ness and vigor to secure favorable
action from the present congress
for a bill introduced to establish
this notable enlargement of the
postal service.
Bureaus of information which
had been established in Peking,
China, for the purpose of in
structing the people on the ideas
of a constitutional government
have been closed. It looked for
a time as' if even China was
about to grant some semblance
of a constitutional government
WHY THERE ARE FAILURES.
A great many people drift
through life without aim or pur
pose or effort. They float along
the line of least resistance, avoid
ing all obstacles and shrinking
from anything that looks like
hard work. Their great desire
is to get "an easy job.” They
do not concern themselves as to
whether or not there is any pros
pects of advancement in it,
whether it offers any opportunity
for self-development or not, or
whether it is a stumbling-block
or a stepping-stone to their fu
ture welfare. They have neither
plan nor programme, nor am
bition to guide them. They sim
ply live for today, and literally,
'take no thought for the mor
row.” This happy-go-lucky pol
icy can lead to but one thing—
failure. Thousands who have
adopted it have drifted, in old
age, to begging in the streets, to
dependence on grudging rela
tives, or to the almshouse.
Many of those unfortunates,
if they had taken stock of them
selves in youth, or had taken the
trouble to find out their success
possibilities, and had planned
their liveR along common sense,
manly linos, might have contri
buted largoly to the services of
mankind and attained honor and
prosperity in their chosen call
ings. Whenever a youth goes
looking for "a soft snap” he is to
be pitied. There can be no doubt
where he will end if he does not
change his tactics. If he does
not brace up, take stock of him
self and put vim and purpose and
energy into his life he will sorely
join the (treat army of the might-
have-beens.
Oliver Wendell Holmes says
that it does not matter so much
where one stands as the direction
in which he is moving. If you
are working according to an in
telligent plan, if you are trying
to make everything you do a
means of advancement to the
goal yon have in view, if your
great ambition is not to make
yourself famous, or rich, or hap
py, but to make your life mean
something in God’s world, go
ahead, for,you are moving in the
right direction and will reach
your goal. But if you are look
ing for an easy place, or running
away from hard work; if you are
too listless or indifferent or care
less to take stock of yourself, to
decide upon the path you wish to
take, to look carefully ahead, but
not too far ahead, or to make out
an intelligent plan of action, and
follow it as nearly as you can, no
matter where you stand, you are
not moving in the ri^ht direction
TAKE A VACATION.
THE VALUE OF M0LE5.
The average farmer regards
moles as something of a nuisance,
if not actually enemies. Spch
will be surprised to learn, on the
highest authority, that they are
friends to be valued. A distin-
guised naturalist carefully exam
ined the stomachs of fifteen
moles, caught in differeut locali
ties, but failed to find therein the
slightest vestige of plants or roots.
On the contrary, they were filled
by the remains of earthworms.
Not satisfied by this fact, he shut
up several moles in a box contain
ing sods ef earth, on which fresh
grass was growing, and a smaller
cage of grubs and earthworms.
In nine days two of the moles
devoured 849 white worms, 198
earthworms, 25 caterpillars and
a mouse (skin and bones) which
had been alive in the box. He
next gave them nothing but veg
etables and m twenty-four hours
two moles died of Starvation.
Another naturalist calculated
that two moles dertroyed 2,000
white worms, or grubs in a single
year. In view of this, it is evi
dent that moles should be multi
plied rather than destroyed.
They do not hurt vegetables or
any kind of vegetation, their
food being principally confined
to the noxious varieties of worms.
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local application, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There Is only one way to cure deaf
ness, and that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness Is caused by an
Inflatnod condition of the mucous
lining of the Eustachlan Tube. When
this tube is Inflamed you have
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing,
and when it is entirely closed, deaf
ness Is the resnlt, and unless the in
flammation can ha taken out and thU
tube restored to it's normal condition,
hearing will he destroyed forever;
nine cases out of ten are caused by
catarrah, which Is nothing but an In
flamed condition of tho mucous sur
faces. We will give one hundred
dollars for any case of deafness (caus
ed by catarrah) that cannot be cured
by Hall's Catarrah Cure. Send for
circulars, free.

A farmer in a nearby county,
while in a generous frame of
mind, gave hie daughter a heu
and a rooster and bade her run
away and be a good girl, prom
ising her that if she would look
after them he would feed the
increase for four years. The
girl, as it were, planted those
two chicks and the results,
cording to her father’s report, is
astonishing. He says she has
#84 in the bank and has 200
chickens which he had to feed
last winter. According to the
farmer’s best calculations, his
daughter will own the farm at
the end of four years and will be
charging him rent for living on it.
After working continuously for
thirty-five years an Illinois farm
er has concluded to take a two
month’s vacation and go to Cali
fornia, leaving, as he said, "all

He should have taken this vaca
tion sooner and oftener. Thirty
five years is a long time between
lay offs. Moreover, he will find
he cannot leave his worries be
hind. At his age, habits both
mental and physical, are fixed
and can’t be changed. He will
be restless all the time he is away
afraid things are not going right
on the farm, besides being onable
to adapt himself to the changes
involved in travel. The beds in
California won’t suit him and he
will conclude he can only sleep
well in his own bed, where
has been lviug every night for
generation. All reasonably suc
cessful fanners should take a va
cation every year, not once in
lifetime. If you Btav at home
sixty years, you might as well
stick there until the last, no trip
will satisfy you.
