Sheriff Bill Merritt left last
Friday with a suitcase,, refus
ing to confide to anybody
where he was going or when
he’d be back.
Of course, this led the cit
izens of the town to wonder.
Some figured that he had gone
on a hunting trip. Some was
sure that he was off on a fish
ing tour. Some, who were
weaker in brain, was dead
sure he had gone to San Fran
cisco to the convention and
was ashamed to to tell it, and
others thought he might be tak
ing a little vacation and did
not know himself where he
was going.
The mystery was cleared up
Tuesday night when he return
ed from Hoboken, N. J., and
brought back Mont Goolsby,
w-ho escaped from the convict
camp about a year ago. Gools
by had gone to the New Jersey
state and enlisted in the army,
and had been to France.
