BASEBALL GAME SILVER
CITY vs. TALLANTS
On Sunday afternoon August 28
a baseball game was played at Sil
ver City. For Silver City it was an
easy game consisting of a well or
ganized ball team with just the
young boys. The Tallants lost their
fast curves before they got to Sil
ver City.
Silver City’s team was James
Bailey, Pat Gober, Billy Callaway,
Powell Turner, Gerald Blackburn,
James Hamby, Manuard Hamby.
The fast hurlers were Dorsey and
Olen Hamby, The Hamby boys
curves were just too fast for the
Tallants, but they played a good
game considering their opponents.
The score was 5 and 6.

WE KEEP KILLING THEM
Labor Day weekend, with its an
nual murders on the highway,
should prompt every school in
Georgia to put in safety education
in driving cars. But T. A. Carmi
chael, who directs thi# program for
the State Department of Education,
tells me that the program still lags
Last year, 5,309 boys and girls
took it in 159 high schools. But
this is not impressive when you
remember that there are 683 high
schools, and 41,000 boys and girls
in this 15-year group. But 45 teach
ers took a course in how to teach
this, at the University of Georgia,
during the summer. Twelve more
studied at Statesboro. No matter
what youngsters study in school,
nor how their marks, it won’t do
them much good unless they’re
going to stay alive to use it. Last
year we killed 971 on our roads,
and injured 10.430. Up to August
23 this year, we had killed 631.
