Parking Lots Alive
With New Car Colors
By Mary Lou Chapman
Americans want exotic new colors in cars these days. Why?
General prosperity is one reason. We will buy a bright red or
yellow car today because we know we can change before we tire
of it. During the depression of
the early thirties, black and
brown and dark blue cars not

Nowadays, with modern paint
developments, light colors are
as durable as dark ones.
War Affected Tastes
World War II played a part
in our desire for more color in
everything. We were ready for
a new approach to civilian liv
ing. One interesting aspect of
this was ex-army men who %
wouldn’t buy anything in khaki
color when peace came, and ex
navy men who wouldn’t wear
blue. This was noticed with in
terest in men’s clothing stores.
The same thing was true in the
demand for new and different
colors in automobiles.
•Sunny climates have also
exerted an influence. It’s a fact
that Californians and Texans
love vivid automobiles, because
their weather allows a more re
laxed and colorful existence.

(The East and Middle West ask
for more conservative colors.)
But the warmer climates seem
to be winning out. Visitors to
those areas have returned home
with a new eye for color.
Youth a Factor
More young people are finan
cially able to buy cars these
days. Their purchases are al
most always in the brighter
color range.
Women are responsible in a
large part, too. When it was
found that women have some
thing to say in the purchase of
the family car in 80% of the
cases, manufacturers paid more
and more attention to feminine
taste.
only matched
the prevailing
mood, but
were also con
sidered more
practical for
use over a
long period of
time. You
didn’t change
cars as fre
quently in
those days.
We women are generally more
color conscious than men, and
want the same color vitality in
cars that we look for in dresses
and interior decoration.
Take a look at some busy
parking lot near you and ex
amine the wide range of color
in the cars parked there. It’s
simply amazing, the number of
brilliant hues you’ll find.
