TOADIE
"How did you ever romp to have
tint name*” l isked the six-year
old tioy wh > had heen sent to my
study by .1 kindly neighbor.
"It's jusl iny name," he replied.
N iturally a l»it disturbed by hav
ing walked into a room he had
never .seen before and talking with
s person lie had never met, the
little fellow kepi fumbling with his
sweater sleeve, end glancing anx
iously at Ihe pictures on the wall.
The neighbor had told me on the
that she wanted him to come alone
that hit mother was then drunk In
the apartment, and she had no idea
where his father was that her
hope was that we might get the
ehlM in some home, and that the
peighltors would help with the ex
pense, whatever the amount.
I gave him a color book, and a
crayon to >fiil out the blanks. I
west along with some details, ob
serving his reactions.
“Look, it's grtiner tie a rabbit,"
he said.
Then followed a deer, and a dog.
"Do you have a dog?” I asked.
He shook In:, head, and went on
with his creation of animals.
I called a friend, and he came
frigid over to the study. .1 gave
* film the background before he saw
the Iny. After a few minutes with
the little fellow, he went to a chllds
home, got an application, and re
turned. I went to the apartment,
found the alcoholic mother sipping
' tilack coffee. She signed the appli
cation with the understanding thatt
when she was normal again, She
would go and talk with the people
•t tho child's home.
"Toadie, let's go and see a place
where there are some happy boys
and girls,” I began.
"Will they whip me?"
His big blue eyes revealed a heart
Of expectancy. We stopped by a
store and got some essential things
4for him, and now were at the
home. The matron met us, stooped
down and pul her arms around
Toadie, and he followed her to the
ward when* his bed was located. A
little boy about Toadie’s age came
In, looked.him over, and began:
"Like dogs? Good ppicture on
right now, big dog fighting a
snake Cum on.”
