Hotel Story
Has History
ROY E. BOTTOMS
Col. Arthur Erwin moved to
Cumming, Ga. in 1833 from
Rutherford County, N.C.
where he was born. He was
married to Evelina Anvil
Terrell who was bom in the
above county. Their dates of
birth were 9-30-1795 and 4-21-
1800 respectively. They were
married in North Carolina on
1-18-1825.
They lived in Cumming, Ga.
for 31 years and he owned and
operated the Erwin Hotel.
The exact location of the hotel
is not known but it is believed
to have been in the area of the
present Parson’s Store on the
east side of the square.
Col. Erwin was made a
colonel in the State Militia in
the year 1836 at George
Kellog’s Store near Ebenezer
Church and such units were
organized for the protection
against the Indians. In so far
as we have been able to learn
he was a hotel keeper all the
time he lived in Cumming.
He left Cumming in 1864
and moved to Floyd County,
Ga. and settled some 14 miles
from Rome, Ga. on the Coosa
River near Livingston which
was the first county seat of
Floyd County. He lived their
on a farm for the remaining
part of his life where he
carried on his farming
operations.
Col. Erwin and wife Evelina
are buried near where he
lived at the Livingston
Methodist Church, and he
died on March 24,1886 and his
wife died on August 1, 1897.
The graves are marked and
some of the other children are
buried in the same plot.
Col. Arthur Erwin and wife
had nine children and their
names and dates of birth are:
Mary Angelina Erwin bom 12-
26-1825, James Miller Erwin
born 1-4-1828, William
Adolphus Erwin bom 1-4-1830,
Martha Elizabeth Erwin bom

Black and she died Oct. 20,
1856 and she is bured in the
Ebenezer Church Cemetery
in Forsyth County, Ga. and
this church is located on
Highway 369. There is a
gravestone and she is buried
near other families by the
name of Black.
Col. Erwin was a close
friend of the late Hiram Parks
Bell who lived in Cumming
and practiced law for over 50
years, served in the United
States Congress at different
times. Col. Bell was a student
at the Cumming Academy in
1847 and Martha Elizabeth
Erwin was a class-mate,
along with his to be wife,
Virginia Lester.
Andrew Lewis Erwin
known by his friends as
“Charley” was a member of
the company which Col. Bell
formed in March 1862 for
service during the Civil War.
He was brave as a soldier,
faithful, cheerful, sparkling
with humor. He was a
universal favorite of the of
ficers and men of the 43rd
Regiment. (Col. Bell served
as a colonel in the war bet
ween the States).
Col. Arthur Erwin was
elected to the Georgia State
Legislature from Forsyth
County and he served during
the years 1839 and 1840. He
was elected to the same
legislative body in 1851 and
served through the year 1852.
Living in the same
household were the children
of Mary Angelina (Erwin)
Black as she had died on
October 20, 1856 and the
grandparents took the
children to rear. Their names
and ages are: Evelina Black,
age 9; Jos. Black age 7; and
Ema Black, age 5.
The above names made up
the household list of Col.
Erwin but since he was
operating a hotel, the names
of the hotel guest at this time
were enumerated in the 1860
census.
There were seven guests of
the hotel on that particular
date and according to their
occupations five of them were
mechanics.
