Farm
Weather
Watch
To April 1
Provided as a service lo growers and gardeners in this area by this
newspaper, the Georgia Extension Service and the National
Weather Service
Spring may get off to a late
start this year. The National
Weather Service 30-day
outlook for Georgia indicates
colder and wetter than usual
weather through March.
That may mean delays in
spring land preparation and
planting in some areas. The
frequency of rains normally
increases through March.
That, plus colder than nor
mal temperatures, would
slow field drying. Dampness
may also increase problems
with seedling blights and
other diseases.
The Weather Service says
soil temperatures could be
unfavorably low for getting
cotton and corn in the ground
by normal planting dates.
Farmers should keep track
of soil temperatures in their
area to determine the best
planting conditions.
The colder temperatures
will also slow down pastures,
but cold stress on poultry
and livestock will be less.
The last spring freeze in
South Georgia counties nor
mally falls within the first
two weeks of March. The
threat of freezing continues
in Central and North
Georgia until the first week
in April.
Good news for peach
growers: chill requirements
have been satisfied for the
1980 peach crop. Growers
now need to watch for short
periods of warm weather,
followed by possible late
frosts.
Tender vegetable crops
are often planted too early in.
Georgia to suit the usual
climate, and if the expected
colder and wetter than nor
mal weather develops this
month, it could compound
that problem.
Daytime temperatures by
the end of March are nor
mally in the upper 60s and
mid 70s. Overnight lows are
in the 40s and low 50s. Mon
thly rainfall varies from four
to more than six inches
across the state.
