Between 300 and 400
consumer-members of
Sawnee Electric Member
ship Corporation will be
surveyed on their energy use
patterns during the next few
months, to provide the
cooperative’s management
with valuable information
for future planning and
energy forecasting.
According to M.J. Gravitt,
General Manager of Sawnee
EMC, these telephone
surveys are extremely im
portant in determining the
EMC’s long-range plans for
facilities and services.
“It is vital for us to know
about how our consumers
are using electricity now,
and what their plans are in
terms of appliance pur
chases, home weatheriza
tion, and other activities, in
order for us to make valid
forecasts for the future,”
Gravitt said.
“This is especially impor
tant for our power supplier,
Oglethorpe Power Corpora
tion, because its manage
ment must have solid in
formation to work with in
planning for construction of
generating and transmission
facilities,” he said. “These
kinds of facilities - especial
ly generating plants - must
be designed, engineered and.
sited several years before
they will be needed, because
it takes so long to complete a
major plant.”
Gravitt explained that the
survey, which will be con
ducted by a professional
research firm, is being done
throughout the state.
“About the same number
of consumers is being
surveyed in each of the 39
EMC’s which are served by
Oglethorpe Power, in addi
tion to a random sample of
Georgia Power Company
and municipal electric
system consumers
throughout the state. All of
these will be done in conjunc
tion, so all the power sup
pliers can acquire
statistically valid data which
will be of tremendous value
in future joint-planning of
generation and transmission
project,” Gravitt said. “And
the data for each
cooperative will then be
given to its management, so
we can use it for our distribu
tion planning and power re
quirement studies. ’ ’
Gravitt noted that the
assistance of the consumers
to be surveyed, who were
selected randomly, is the
key to the success of the pro
ject.
“We’re asking that those
consumers who are con
tacted take the few minutes
required to answer the
survey questions as fully as
possible. This survey is be
ing conducted for their
ultimate benefit, because if
we have valid information to
work with, we can make sure
called to the scene.
Last Saturday Station
Seven received a call to the
Hanes residence on Hwy. 19,
in the Silver City Communi
ty, when lightning struck the
home. Firemen reported no
structural damage to the
home, but damage to the
electrical wiring.
On Monday, March 10, at
8:48 a.m., firemen from Sta
tions One, Five and Two
answered the call to
Turner’s Garage on Hwy 20.
Upon arriving on the scene,
volunteer firemen reported
the building was totally
engulfed in flames.

the best services, at the
lowest possible cost, in the
future. And if any consumer
has a question about the
survey, he or she should feel
free to contact us at Sawnee

discuss the survey,” Gravitt
stated.
This survey will be con

April and May.
