* Volunteers
THIS WEEK there are a few more words I need to say
about Forsyth County basketball. Last week this space was
devoted to the two high school teams and their recent terrific
seasons. It is some of these young people I would like to com
pliment again.
The first Saturday of last December the Cumming Recrea
tion and Parks Department began its county-wide youth
basketball program. For 10 Saturdays, beginning at 9 a.m.
and lasting to 1:30 p.m., the department conducted this pro
gram. Really, all the department did was reserve facilities,
handle registration, furnish balls and maintain other ad
ministrational functions.
What really made the program tick was the direct involve
ment of volunteers with the better than 300 kids par
ticipating.
These volunteers, who met Saturday after Saturday, with
the kids were of course members of the Forsyth County var
sity basketball teams. Often times, these Saturday mornings
followed late Friday night ballgames for the players, but
these volunteers hardly ever faltered and would show up to
instruct and coach the kids no matter how sleepy and tired
they were.
And besides having to schedule every Saturday morning
around youth basketball, none of these young people were
paid a cent for the time and effort they contributed to the kids
in the program.
+++
IN ANY program of this size there will naturally be times
that things don’t run as smoothly as they should and there are
always those who will point out such flaws. However, each
year when the program begins, it doesn’t take very long to
place volunteers other than the varsity players in a position
of helping. Simply because there aren’t very many who are
willing to commit 10 Saturdays of their time to the program
as do the varsity players.
It is very simple. Without the concern and dedication of
these fine young high school people there probably wouldn’t
.even be a youth basketball program in this county, surely not
one that allows so many kids to participate.
So, to Forsyth County High varsity basketball players of
the past, present and future, thank you for providing the man
power to conduct this program.
A special thanks to the following young women and men
who made the program possible this year: Ginger Orr, Darla
Sexton, Amy Cullen, Dawn Brown, Tracy Gossett, Tracey
Hughes, Ronny Bennett, Chip Housley, Scott Durham, Joe
Parker, Derek Eberhart, Jimmy Willis, Steven Reece and
also past players Shane Blackburn and Tim Martin.

First Place: Printers

CPI Wins Adult Men’s
Tournament At Park
The Cumming Recreation
Department recently con
cluded its local adult basket
ball play with a post season
tournament involving all six
teams in the league.
The tournament was held
Feb. 26 and 27 with the first
and second place honors go
ing to the same two teams
that finished first and second
in league play, Corporate
Printers Inc. and The Bank
of Cumming, respectively.
Even though the cham
pionship game pitted the
number one and two seeded
teams against each other,
the tournament was not
without its upsets.
The opening game of the
tournament was Strick’s vs.
Big Creek. For the season,
Strick’s had finished third
with a 5-5 record and Big
Creek had finished tied for
fifth with a 2-8 mark. Despite
a 16 point effort by John
Dishroom Strick’s never
could really get it going as
Big Creek, paced by Steve
Hall’s 12 points played a
very inspired game to take a
55-54 victory and advance to
the semi-finals the next night
against The Bank of Cumm
ing.
Following Dishroom’s 16
points for Strick’s were Tim
Martin with 13, Pete Atkin-
son 11, Travis Densmore 6
and Terry Strickland and
Dennis Anderson with four
each. In the winning effort,
besides Hall’s 12 points,
George Ellis and John Hall
had 10 each, Russ Wallace 9,
Tony Frady 10, Keith
Moulder and Allen Mathis
two each.
+++
The second game of the
night saw fourth place
league finisher Mack’s take
on Midway Building and
Supply, who finished the
season tied for fifth. Again it
was upset time as Midway
defeated Mack’s 55-49 and
advanced to the semi-final
game the following night
against CPI.
Howard Brackett’s 17
points led the way for Mid
way as Steve Shoemake had
16, Ronnie Shoemake 11, Tim
Gravitt 6 and Tim Kohler 5.
Mack’s meanwhile, was pac
ed by Ronnie Densmore with
15, Tony Henderson 13,
George Bell 9, Garvice
Shook 6, Hiram Belt 4 and
Randy Waldrop 2.

For The Bank Dennis

CPI then faced off against
Midway for their first game
of the tournament and were

For CPI Wes Mitchell had
