Student
Vets Can
Get Money
ATLANTA Veterans en
tering college this fall on a
full-time basis and who are
finding it difficult to accu
mulate some extra money to
supplement their GI Bill ed
ucation benefits should in
vestigate the VA’s “Work-
Study” program.
Georgia Commissioner of
Veterans Affairs Pete
Wheeler said, “The program
allows a student to earn up
to $775 per semester for 250
hours of work and the money
earned under this program
is in addition to the usual ed
ucational allowances pro
vided by the GI Bill.”
Veterans are not required
to work the maximum 250
hours; they may work any
portion of the time that
meets their financial needs
and fits their individual pro
grams of study.
Wheeler said that priority
in the work-study program
is given to veterans having
service-connected disabili
ties rated 30 per cent or
more. Consideration also is
given to financial need, mo
tivation and the nature of the
work.
Once an employment
agreement is processed, the
VA makes an advance pay
ment of 40 per cent of the
amount of the work-study
agreement. Thereafter, pay
ment is made upon comple
tion of each 50 hours of work.
Interested veterans can
learn more about the VA
Work-Study Program at any
office of the Georgia Depart
ment of Veterans Service.
