Clog Program
One of the outstanding at
tractions of most southern
mountain festivals is clog
ging. This traditional Appa
lachian Mountain dance is
derived from the English
buck and wing’ the dance of
the 16th Century English
mill workers.
Clogging differs from
other American regional
dances because of its unique
rhythm and sound. Dancers
wear taps on their shoes to
creat the sound made by the
English wooden-soled shoes
on cobble stone.
Barbara Meschiari of
Cumming defines clogging
as we know it today, as a
“combination buck and tap
with a western flare.” Ms.
Meschiari was first intro
duced to clogging 11 years
ago when her parents be
came interested in learning
the dance and encouraged
her to join them.
Since then, she has be
come an expert and has
taught many others the in
trades of the dance. Her
classes are held four eve
nings a week in Freehome
and every Thursday at
Mashburn School.
