Some energy saving tips
• Use cold water rather than hot to
operate your food disposer. This
saves the energy needed to heat the
water, is recommended for the appli
ance, and aids in getting rid of
grease. Grease solidifies in cold wa
ter and can be ground up and washed
away.
• Install an aerator in your kitchen
sink faucet. By reducing the amount
of water in the flow, you use less hot
water and save the energy that would
have been required to heat it. The
lower flow pressure is hardly notice
able.
• If you need to purchase a gas oven
or range, look for one with an auto
matic (electronic) ignition system
instead of pilot lights. You’ll save an
average of up to 47 percent of your
gas use 4l percent in the oven and
53 percent on the top burners.
• If you have a gas stove, make sure
the pilot light is burning efficiently
with a blue flame. A yellowish flame
indicates an adjustment is needed.
• Never boil water in an open pan.
Water will come to a boil faster and
use less energy in a kettle or covered
pan.
• Keep range-top burners and re
flectors clean. They will reflect the
heat better, and you will save energy.
• Match the size of pan to the
heating element. More heat will get to
the pan; less will be lost to surround-
Art needed for new complex
The Fulton County Arts Council is now inviting slide
registry applications from all interested visual arts and
artists representatives in preparation for selecting art
for the new Fulton County Government Complex now
under construction.
Each artists can be represented in the registry by
submitting a minimum of five 35mm color slides of their
recent works. A maximum of 20 slides will beaccepted
per artists.
Slides should give an overview of the artists’s style and
abilities. Slides may be submitted at any time. An
updated resume should accompany the application form
which is available from the arts council office.
The slide registry will be used by the Arts Council’s
Public Art Program which is responsible for commis
sions and purchases of art for this site and other county
facilities.
In addition, the registry will be used to notify artists of

Veterans should enroll for school now
Georgia Commissioner of Veterans Affiars Pete
Wheeler is advising persons planning to enroll in school
this fall under programs administered by the Veterans
Administration that it is not a bit too soon to be working
on their applications.
“Veterans planning to enroll under the GI Bill, as well
as wives, widows and children of certain veterans,
should make certain that the necessary paper work has
been accomplished,” said Wheeler.
GI Bill training for veterans terminates at the end of
ten years following discharge. Wives and children of
veterans rated 100 percent disabled, as well as widows

• If you cook with electricity, get in
the habit of turning off the burners
several minutes before the allotted
cooking time. The heating element
will stay hot long enough to finish the
cooking for you without using more
electricity.
• When using the oven, make the
most of the heat from that single
source. Cook as many foods as you
can at one time. Prepare dishes that
can be stored or frozen for later use
or make oven-cooked meals.
• Watch the clock or use a timer;
don’t continually open the oven door
to check food. Every time you open
the door heat escapes and your cook
ing takes more energy.
• Use small electric pans or ovens
for small meals rather than the
kitchen range or oven. They use less
energy.
• Use pressure cookers and micro
wave ovens if you have them. They

Veterans may enter training under the GI Bill without
benefit of special VA counseling, although the counseling
is available upon request. Wives, widows and children
are not required to undergo counseling either if they are

DISHWASHING ENERGY SAVERS
The average dishwasher uses 14
gallons of hot water per load. Use it
energy efficiently.
• Be sure your dishwasher is full,
but not overloaded, when you turn it
on.
• When buying a dishwasher, look
for a model with air-power and/or
overnight dry setting. These features
automatically turn off the dishwasher
after the rinse cycle. This can save
you up to one-third of your total
dishwashing energy costs.
• Let your dishes air dry. If you
don’t have an automatic air-dry
switch, turn off the control knob after
the final rinse. Prop the door open a
little and the dishes will dry faster.
• Don’t use the “rinse hold” on your
machine. It uses 3 to 7 gallons of hot
water each time you use it.
• Scrape dishes before loading
them into the dishwasher so you don’t
have to rinse them. If they need
rinsing, use cold water.
If every dishwasher user in the
country cut out just one load a week,
we’d save almost 15 million kilowatt
hours of electricity every day or the
equivalent of about 9,000 barrels of oil
a day.
