Appeals board rejects variance
By Gary Tanner

Sometime a lot can be too little, as builder Philip
out at Monday night’s regular meeting of
the Forsyth County Appeals Board.
Whelchel was asked by an absentee landowner to put
up a house on a lot near the lake. But when he surveyed
the lot with all applicable setbacks met, he discovered
there was not enough land left over on which to build.
After hearing testimony from nearby homeowner
Bruce Hearn, who argued a house on the lot would be
squeezing too many houses in” the area, the board
voted to deny the variance.
In other action:
• The board voted to dismiss a lot size variance
request of 1.20 acres for Lila W. Johnson when she failed
to appear at the meeting. The request was carried over
from the previous meeting’s agenda.
• In another item of old business, the board decided
that a revised request from Bernard Gilleland for a
building line width variance of 38 feet was not sufficiently

Cherokee County has received a $50,000 state solid
waste management grant which will match local funds to
assist with the purchase of sanitary landfill equipment
This grant money is part of the $2 million set aside by
the 1986 General Assembly to assist cities and counties
with their solid waste collection and disposal activities.
The matching funds are administered by the Environ
mental Protection Division of the Department of Natural
Resources. Communities throughout the state were
encouraged to write the department and identify their

their citizens.
