Athletic Center all the way to Wal-Mart,'
said Hanberry.
Their efforts weren't wasted as over
S7OO was raised.
"This is just the beginning." said Han
berry. “There's a lot more we have to
raise in order to make a trip like that
one.”
"I was getting older (38) and I guess I
felt my days were numbered as a softball
player." she said.
Instead it's the opposition whose days
appeared numbered.
TRIATHLON Continued from page IB
It was a day which saw some com
petitors work as they played, or raced.
Nancy Horton, who teaches swim
ming at Cumming City Park, served as
a lifeguard while competing in the
swim portion. She completed the
swim in 28 minutes, well under the
one hour cut-off limit
Horton was a member a local
mixed-relay team that included Larry
Boling and Bill Hansford.
“I guess you could say she was doing
double-duty during the race,” said
Hamilton.

despite suffering from a acute viral
infection, lost a close 4-6 decision.
Cumming City Park opened the dis
trict championships with a 5-0 victory
over Columbus. It was a clean sweep
as singles Hanberry (No. 1), Colwell
(No. 2), followed by Loveil and Nix
(No. 1 doubles). Spencer and Whitford
(No. 2 doubles) and Anderson and
Wheeler (No. 3 doubles) all won their
matches.
The No. 2 doubles team of Spencer
and Whitford handed City Park their
only finals victory.
The entire match was much closer
as City Park had an opportunity to
' win. losing several matches by the
1 closest of margins. Hanberry lost a 6-
f 4. 6-3 decision in the No. 1 singles
competition. Colwell dropped a 6-3,6-
2 decision but the No. 1 doubles of
Lovell and Nix lost a 7-5,6-3 decision.
Doublegate was eliminated 4-1 in
■ the second round of the state by even
tual champion Athens.
Dunwoody's Bob Bakert suffered
the only lost articles, a pair of shoes
and swim goggles. They were later lo
cated and returned to the owner.
Although no such figures are kept
the volunteer count for the annual
race was also impressive.
“Everything worked out the way it
was planned." said Hamilton. “The
main thing is we couldn’t have done it
without 350 volunteers. The main
thing is everything was done for a wor
thy cause (Sawnee Community Cen
ter, Inc.).”
