Drug testing of state employees begins July 1
By Kristin Jeffries

A drug testing law should swing into
effect July 1 but Forsyth County
school officials will not act on it until
they get further directions from the
state.
House Bill 1263. passed in the last
legislative session, requires all state
employees hiredafterJulyltobe test

“There were 32 laws enacted deal

Great Southern Federal Bank on the verge of being sold
By Brad Hundt

The Great Southern Federal Bank
branch on Hwy. 9 in Cumming will
likely have a new name in the next
month as it, along with the rest of the
banking chain, will be sold.
A victim of the nationwide Savings
and Loan crisis, Great Southern Fed
eral has been in conservatorship by
the Resolution Trust Corp. for the last
year. The Trust Corp. is mandated by
federal law to sell the chain of 21
branches in the Great Southern chain
one year following the take over.
Controversial record can’t be found in Forsyth County
By Brad Hundt
Staff Writer
If you try to pick up 2 Live Crew’s
controversial record album “As Nasty
As They Wanna Be” in Forsyth Coun
ty, you’re going to be out of luck.
Turtles Music and Video outlet in
the Lanier Crossing Shopping Center
just outside Cumming, the only record
store in the county, will not stock the
LP because of a policy forbidding it
throughout the Turtles’ chain.
However, the store does stock a
copy of "As Clean As They Wanna Be.”
That album is a cleaned-up, “PG” ver
sion of the “Nasty" album.
A Miami, Fla. based rap group, 2
Live Crew burst into public con
sciousness last week when a Miami
record store owner was arrested for
stocking copies of the album. A dis

No school system will be imple

School Superintendent Rick Case
walks a line philosophically between
individual rights and creating a safe
place for children to learn.
“On the one hand, we want to make
sure we have a safe learning environ

to violate individual rights,” said
Case. “I can see both sides of the issue

When the change over is complete,
the only changes evident to customers
at the Great Southern branch in Cum

said. The location would not close for
anv period of time.
“When it opens the next day, a dif
ferent name will be on the door, it’ll
be XYZ bank,” Weller said.
The buy-out of Great Southern Fed

either all the branches will be bought
by one company or some of the
branches could be sold to other buy

Gwinnett County Commission Chair

“a filthy, slimy bunch.”
“There’s only that one and a couple
of others we won’t carry,” said David
Hicks, assistant store manager for the
Cumming Turtles. “I wouldn’t want to
buy that Give me the Allman Brothers

The furor surrounding the record
apparently has stirred interest in the
the album in Forsyth. At week’s end,
the Cumming Turtles was out of
copies of “As Clean As They Wanna
Be,” with the store ordering more
copies because of the demand.
“Several people have come in and
asked about it,” said Melissa Henson,
an assistant store manager at the Tur

John Arrington, state personnel di
rector, did not know if the law would
be in effect by July 1.
Not all teachers for the 1990-91
school year in Forsyth will have been
hired by July 1, said Case, who fore
sees the law being enacted retroac

The Georgia Association of Educa

of drug tests and the possibility of the
teachers themselves paying for the
tests.

However, Resolution Trust Corp.
probably won’t sell the branch sepa
rately, Weller believes.
“I think the RTC’s preference is to
have someone buy the whole institu
tion,” Weller said. According to Wel
ler, “several institutions” have ex
pressed an interest in taking that
route.
When the company will be sold has
yet to be determined, but a deal will
likely be sewn up by the end of the

we’re out of it”
Sales of both albums are reportedly
escalating throughout the rest of the
country as well.
The roughly 40 Turtles stores in the
Atlanta area are not carrying “As Nas
ty As They Wanna Be” because it does
not carry a manufacturer’s warning
label about the explicit lyrics, said
Brian Poehner, the vice-president for
purchasing with Turtles. The chain
will stock a handful of other LPs with
frank descriptions of sex or rampant
profanity, as long as the record label
supplies the sticker. Turtles then re
quires the buyer to be 18-years of age
or older before they buy the record.
“We feel the records should be
available, but you have to be a certain
age to hear that stuff,” Poehner said.
