Mayor Ford Gravitt was contacted
Friday by The Forsyth County News
but did not return calls to the paper
before the story deadline.
During the press conference,
Daugherty, who called his job “a liv

peatedly called'the mayor “a friend
and a person they support”
Both Daugherty and Skelton said
they were hired about a year and two
months ago after interviewing with
Mrs. McCollum.
Daugherty stated commissioners
Michael McGaughey, Michael Ben
nett and Chairman Barry Hillgartner
were repeatedly targeted for what he
described as political injustice by the
station. “We were told to ‘trip them
(the mayor’s opposition) up’ during in
terviews,” he said.
County Commission Chairman Hill
gartner was present Thursday at the
press conference. He said “They de
serve all the credit in the world. This
has got to be stopped. It’s political
hatchet work It’s way over the line.”
Daugherty reported the heat at the

station turned up recently when Hill
gartner was invited to rebutt the may
or’s allegations of a conspiracy be
tween the three commissioners,
Tyson Foods and State Rep. Bill Bar
nett on the air.
Daugherty said McCollum re
marked ‘I can't believe you’re having
Hillgartner on’ and demanded that
Gravitt’s statements be aired again
during his interview.
“I thought I had given the mayor
fair time,” Daugherty stated.
He said McCollum later stated “you
know where your bread is buttered."
Daugherty said he contacted Hill
gartner after he decided to tell the
public about the alleged favoritism.
“I came to Barry as somebody I’ve
covered, (as a reporter for the sta
tion)” Daugherty said. “I thought it
was high time he knew what the hell
was going on around here.”
The two said they are not seeking
legal action at this time, but are plan
ning to take things “day by day.” The
two speculated, although they did not
have immediate plans of resignation,
they may soon have to look for new
jobs.
“My next stop will be to the unem
ployment office,” Daugherty stated.
“And I’ll be right behind him,” said
Skelton.
Skelton was asked not to go on the
air Friday. Radio station employees
reported she would be back at work
Monday.

CHARGE

Terry Roger Rose, 51, was arrested
and charged with criminal solicita
tion to commit murder after a two
week GBI investigation. The Georgia
Bureau of Investitgation reported
Wednesday he was still being held in
the Dawson County jail.
According to the Hall County Sher
iff Department and GBI Agent Frank
Baker, Rose was arrested in Gaines
ville on May 15 and charged with
criminal solicitation.
“He was charged with soliciting to
hire someone to commit an arson that
occurred earlier this year,” Baker
said. 1
(The agents he had allegedly target
ed for murder this time were investi
gating that crime, said Baker.
Rose was arrested in Dawson after
he “apparently attempted to arrange
for the murder of a GBI agent and
another agent in the case,” Baker
stated.
Baker could not comment further
on the alleged crime.

However, documented statements
circulated by Gene Hansard at the
meeting indicated it may be illegal for
the city's citizens to have a separate
vote in addition to the one they cast as
a county resident if a referendum is
ever brought forth.
Attorney General Michael J. Bow
ers stated the Constitution “requires
a separate referendum only when a
city contains at least 10 percent ofthe
population of the county.”
Current census population figures
show Cumming contains 2,828 resi
dents or 6.4 percent of the county’s
44,083 residents.
“It can’t be proposed that way be
cause it would strictly be unconstitu
tional,” Barnett stated.
Welch presented the resolution
during the five minutes he and all oth
er committee members were allowed
to voice their conclusions about the
controversial issue.
Seder’s shot-down proposal called
for a study commission to be appoint

charged to study, develop alternatives
and recommend the future ofthe cur

put on the Nov. 1992 election ballot
“The information the Forsyth

if they believe a new charter to be
advisable,” Seder’s proposal stated.

Jerry Grogan stated.
“I’m strongly against consolida
tion,” city representative Wilma
Moore stated. “I think the city citizens
should have the right to vote as well as
the county citizens.”
After each member’s five minutes
had expired, Gene Hansard moved
for a rebuttle but his motion failed.
County-appointee John Mashbum
spoke up and stated that both resolu
tions by Welch and Seder should go
forward as the committee’s recom
mendations. He moved that the mem
bers sign whichever one they agreed
with.
However, Welch and Cumming
Mayor Ford Gravitt argued that the
proposal receiving the majority ofthe
votes should be considered the “offi
cial” decision of the commission,
even if a report from the minority is
also sent
Welch’s shared opinion became the
amendment to Mahshbum’s motion
and was approved. However, Mash
bum’s move was never officially voted
on.
Gravitt also added and it was
agreed upon that copies of Welch’s
proposal should be sent not only as an
answer to the Georgia State Legisla
tor, complying with House Bill 361
which originally set up the commis
sion, but to the governor, lieutenant
governor and Georgia Senator Na
than Deal.
However, Forsyth County and Cum
ming may not have heard the last of
the consolidation issue.
“My feeling is I would want the pub
lic to vote at some point and time ei
therby a chartercommission or a non
binding vote asking if they want a
charter commission to be formed,”
said Barnett “I’ve always thought
the people should have a vote.”
“The committee is over with as far
as I’m concerned,” Gravitt stated.
“The vote is taken.”
