and Crafts
classes
The Gallery, in cooperation
with The Sawnee Association of The
Arts, and The Community Center,
is pleased to announce the fall class
schedule. We are happy to offer
high quality classes at affordable
rates. You are encouraged to ex
plore and learn the following cre
ative art forms. Some are one day
workshops, while others are a series
of classes. All classes will be held
at The Gallery in Tri County Plaza
where samples for each class are
on display. We hope you will enjoy.
BASKETS: Artist, Paula Cham
bers, will be giving a basket work
shop at The Gallery on Saturday,
Oct 26. The class will be from 1-4
p.m. You will learn basic basket
techniques and will complete an Ap
palachian Egg Basket The cost is

ADVANCED CROCHET: Hel
en Brooks will teach advanced cro
cheting. You will complete a
Treetop angel in class. Examples are
on display at The Gallery. The
class will be four consecutive Mon
days from 10 a.m. until noon, be
ginning Oct. 28. The cost is S2O.
POTTERY...HANDBUILD
ING: Have you ever wanted to try
your hand at clay? This will be a
flexible workshop for all level stu
dents. The cost of $25 will cover
all materials and firing. The class
will be Friday, Oct. 25 from 9 a.m.
until noon. Rick Rennick, Instructor.
DRAWING: (ages 6-10): This
class will develop the young artists’
creative capabilities as they de
velop their own imaginations. The
class will meet on four consecu
tive Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. begin
ning on Nov. 5. The cost is S4O

DRAWING: (ages 11-17): This
class will explore individual skills
concentrating on perspective and
how to create life-like drawings with

Businesswomen’s week

The first Monday in every month
they meet at a restaurant to have din
ner together. They catch up with one
another then take part in a short busi
ness meeting and an educational
program.
It may sound like a typical monthly
civic club gathering, but the organiza
tion’s members will tell you their
group is special in its own way.
“We support each other,” they say.
The Cumming-Forsyth Business
and Professional Women (BPW) have
this week dedicated to them. Presi
dent Bush and Governor Miller both
proclaimed Oct 20-26 as this year’s
National Business Women’s Week.
The local organization has been ob
serving the week since their 1977
establishment
The local group is an offstem of the
National Federation of Business and
Professional Woman, the oldest and
largest organization in the U.S. repre
senting and serving as the voice of
Central Band receives superior rating in competition

Forsyth Central’s Flash of Crimson
Band is succeeding in holding its sta
tus as one of the best.
Last weekend the band pulled all
superior marks at the Fort Mountain
Marching Contest at Chatsworth
clinching first place in a field of five
high school bands from Georgia.

working women and their families.
“Women helping women” has be
come a motto for this group. About 20
women are affiliated with BPW in the
local chapter. And this week they
have been showing the community
how they live up to their theme.
Local businesswomen have volun
teered to serve as mentors to high
school students this week. When the
final school bell rings each day, the
young women have been traveling to
their workplaces for a taste of the life
a modem businesswomen lives.
“The goal is to have the young wom
an begin to see their choices as well as
begin to develop responsibility and
the discipline needed in having a ca
reer,” said Norma Jean Kieffer, who
serves as first vice president of the
local BPW chapter.
Young women selected through re
ferrals have been participating in the
mentor program. Placed in business
es where they have shown an interest
or where they might work best, the
students have been exposed to a vari
ety of workplaces throughout the com-

munity. Some fields explored have
been physical therapy, business ad
ministration, journalism, accounting,
and computer technology.
The group has also been collecting
nominations for its annual “Woman of
Achievement” award. So far, 25
names have been received from the
community. BPW will announce the
winner at its Nov. 4 meeting.
The local chapter also offers schol
arships for senior high school girls
and women in transition returning to
school. BPW also provides workshops
and seminars that provide for profes
sional and personal development and
assists women’s and children’s
shelters.
In the Spring, the local chapter rec
ognizes a “Young Careerist” - a wom
an 21 to 35 years of age who has made
great strides in the field - from the
community.
The 1992 year will bring an array of
speakers to the local chapter’s month

The Forsyth County Marshal's office held a gala celebration for Marshal John
Pickelsimer on Friday as he turned the big FOUR-OH. The celebration, which
was planned by employees in the Marshal's office, was a complete surprise to
the "Over-the-Hill” Marshal.

four hours a week from 7 to 9 p.m. on
Tuesdays and Thursdays. The color
guard-flag corps does that with an ad
ditional hour and a half practice on
Mondays.
