DA.R.E program benefits from educational videa

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s
Department is working hard this
holiday season to limit the prob
lem of illegal drugs by means of a
video produced through Prestige

Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
program that goes on ail year in
the school system.

Cartwright, 20, knew she wanted
to help people when she graduated
from high school.
“You see people in need, how
can you not help?” she said.
She bought a book about volun

found Simon Community, which
was founded in 1963.

Forsyth Central High School to
produce a public service video
against drug abuse. “We want to
send a message, stay away from
drugs,” said Forsyth County
Sheriff Jerry Padgett.
The video dramatized the conse
quences of drug possession, and
featured “Kai”, a Malnois drug
dog from the Netherlands. “This
dog has paid for himself many
times over through drug
seizures,” Padgett said.

In the heart of London, she has
set up a sidewalk cafe for the
homeless, which was beginning to
receive media attention by the time
she left to come home. The cafe’s
tables and chairs offer the home
less a gathering spot “free from
the fear of being told they must
move on,” Cartwright said. Free
hot tea and coffee are served.
“They read the paper, swap
books and have chats,” Cartwright
said. “It’s a spot without planned
activities, so they aren’t told to do
crafts or something. They can just
relax.”
About 20 individuals visit the
outdoor cafe at once, unless it’s
raining, Cartwright said.
In addition to the shelters and the
cafe, the Simon Community vol-
Central for their help with the
video and Paul Spencer (one of
the actors that participated in the
video) for his help, he said.
Deputy Sheriff Diane Baggett is
the D.A.R.E. officer who teaches
drug education in Forsyth County
Elementary Schools year-round.
The program is a 17-week course
where Baggett spends one day in
each school per week.
The D.A.R.E. program began in
1984 in the Los Angeles School
District as a joint operation
unteers also go on soup runs and
tea runs, taking a truckful of treats
to the homeless throughout the day
and night. They also talk with
homeless people in the streets,
offering them a chance to unload
their troubles.
“I’d say we come in contact with
150 homeless people each day,”
Cartwright said.
That’s not always easy.
“It’s hard. There are so many
people telling you so much pain,”
Cartwright said. “It’s stressful and
demanding.”
Cartwright will help out at the
Simon Community for a bit longer,
but next year she hopes to study
philosophy at the University of
London.

The Chattahoochee Riverside
Flyers airfield was opened two
years ago in December. Don Urch
worked with Hy Haggett, the man
ager of the park, to develop the
area. An existing runway was
reconditioned, six to eight feet of
growth was removed, land was
leveled, trees were cut down and a
drainage system was installed to
create the park, Urch said.
An entire family, regardless of
their flying abilities, can enjoy the
park. Behind the green airfield are
picnic tables, a children’s play
area, a horseshoe pit and basket
ball courts.

Jim Wikle’s acrobatic biplane has
a 2.5 horsepower, four stroke
engine. It’s designed for torque
strength to pull it up rather than for
speed, he said. It is a one-sixth
scale model of an actual plane
used by the U.S. Acrobatics
team. Some racing airplanes, built
for speed, can fly as fast as 150-
200 mile per hour.
