Local man gets
20 years on
drug conviction
By Colby Jones
Staff Writer
A 45-year-old local man was
sentenced to 20 years in prison
Tuesday after pleading guilty in
Forsyth County Superior Court to
trafficking methamphetamine.
Wendol Hemrick will be
required to serve seven years in
prison and the remaining portion
of the sentence on probation in
connection with a Jan. 19 raid on
his home.
Superior Court Judge Stan
Gault suspended a $200,000 fine
because officials seized property
from Hemrick and he cooperated
in the investigation, according to
court documents.
Investigators with the Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Office said the
raid netted about 2.5 pounds of
methamphetamine the bulk of
it wrapped in aluminum foil pack
ages shaped like baked potatoes.
They estimate the drugs would
have sold for about $250,000 on
the street.
Investigators said about
SII,OOO cash also was found
stuffed in Hemrick’s pants pocket.
Another $16,000 was seized from
his bank account and mobile
home at 2035 Hemrick Road in
south Forsyth County. The sher

High and low air pressures
affect climate across region
Question: Now I’m confused.
You’ve got your highs and lows in
air pressure. Then there are high
and low air masses. I understand
pressure and particles packed
together, but what’s the connec
tion to air masses? Ginny in
Snellville.
Answer: I see your confusion.
You’re right on the use of your
terms in regard to areas of air
pressure. A high actually has a
higher value of pressure and usu
ally represents an area of dry sta
ble air. A low actually has a lower
value of pressure and usually rep
resents an area of stormy unstable
air. Do you see the confusion
coming up?
An air mass is not called a
“high” or “low” air mass. They
are labeled by their source, which
would be continental, maritime or
tropical.
However, a broad air of high
pressure that’s responsible for
bright sunny weather might be
called a “high air mass,” but that’s
some TV performer who doesn’t
know what they are talking about.
Q: Are all highs warm? Are
all lows cold? Jason in
Jonesboro.
A: Second question first.
Usually, an area of low pressure
has cooler temperatures due to the
cloud cover and a general lack of
sunshine. However, in the
Southwest during the summertime
a “heat low” often forms that has

rag-tag assortment of rifles and

Sheriff Denny Hendrix said at
the time of Hemrick’s arrest that
methamphetamine or “speed” has
become the drug of choice in the
county and it now cuts across
geographic and age boundaries.
A stimulant that can be made
using over-the-counter drugs,
methamphetamine was initially
developed in the early part of the
20th century as a nasal deconges
tant and for use in the treatment
of narcolepsy. The federal govern
ment declared it an illegal
Schedule II drug in the 19705,
meaning it has little medical use
and a high potential for abuse. It
has long been prevalent in rural
areas because it is cheaper than
cocaine.
In pleading guilty to traffick
ing methamphetamine, Hemrick
avoided facing a maximum possi
ble punishment of 30 years in
prison and $1 million fine.
Gault also ordered Hemrick to
participate in a drug treatment
program and to abstain from pos
sessing any guns or alcohol dur
ing the course of his probation.
Drug trafficking charges
against Hemrick’s 42-year-old
wife, Sue, were dismissed in court
Tuesday.

Officers said the man appeared
extremely intoxicated.
He was placed in handcuffs for
the protection of the medical staff
while they examined him.

tors. He was taken to Laurelwood

the same properties as a low with
out the clouds. But it’s hot.
Now the first question. No, all ’
highs are not warm. It depends on
their source. If the high forms
over Canada, it tends to be cool.
And in the winter that means cold
for Georgia. But if the high forms j
in the tropics like the Bermuda
high, that’s very warm. So highs
and lows can be both.
Q: And hurricanes combine
highs and lows, right? Molly
in Cumming.
A: In away, yes. A hurricane
is a huge area of low pressure at 1
the surface. We often talk about
hurricanes moving into areas of
“favorable” development as they
move through the tropics.
What we are referring to is a
“favorable” wind field in the
upper levels of the atmosphere
that won’t shear or tear the storm
apart. That favorable condition is
created by an upper-level high. So
we often get a low at the surface
and a high overhead in support of
any developing hurricanes.
