Extra inning letdown
By Sam Wallace
Sports Writer
North Forsyth High, the
reigning Forsyth County
Invitational fast-pitch softball
champions, dropped one to the
West Hall High Spartans 2-1 in
extra-innings Monday.
North pitcher Wendy Adams
(4-2) did her part though, hurl
ing a complete game, allowing
only one earned run and fan
ning six. But North’s defense

Dragster drives Chevy to win
Cumming’s Kenny Wigington drove his ‘97
Chevy past the levy and into the winner’s bracket
at the Atlanta Dragway this weekend.
The local dragster recorded an elapsed time of
11.81 seconds after topping out at 61.31 mph in
his Trophy class victory. His dial-in was 18.20.
But the final had a bizarre finish, as both rac
ers went about a half a second faster than what
they had predicted.
Second place went to Bob Petetit of
Gainesville, whose elapsed time was 9.06 after
reaching 78.95 mph. His dial-in was 14.00.
In other races, Brad Howard took first in
Super Pro, Melissa Camp broke out in the 8- to
12-year-old Junior Dragster class, and Kelly Gray
won her first race at Atlanta Dragway with the
starting line advantage in the 13- to 17-year-old
Junior Dragster class.
At Lanier National Speedway, when the ride
came to an end, Clay Dale emerged with the
Budweiser Late Model race win and Shane
Chastain unofficially became the new points
leader at Lanier National Speedway.

points heading into Saturday’s event, won the

Clay Dale won the 50-lap Late Model race.
Sunclear Water Fast Qualifier award then rolled a
four which put Tony Bennett on the pole.
A pivotal moment in the race occurred on
lap 19, when Dale and Chastain split the
lapped car of Jason Meadows on the
frontstretch. Chastain emerged with the race
lead, but running three-wide affected his entry
into turn one, resulting in a spin.

third on a passed ball. Neither
team would be able to score a
run until the first extra inning.
The Spartans’ Johnson led
off the eighth with a double.
North tried to pick her off at
second, but the throw went into
center field, allowing Johnson
to plate the winning run.
North’s Jacque Stewart was
2-for-4 on the day.
North is now 5-2 on the
year, while West Hall’s record
improved to 2-0.

Bulldogs QB
decision is
reached, at
least it seems
Georgia head football coach Mark
Richt finally made his much awaited
decision Monday sort of.
Richt promised he would name the
Bulldogs’ starting quarterback for the
Sept. 1 opener against Arkansas State.
Instead, he only promoted redshirt
freshman David Greene to No. 1 and
stopped short of saying he will be the
team’s starter. Richt keeps saying he is
comfortable with any of three quarter
backs and promises “we can win with
any of them.”
But I don’t buy it.
Odds are the Dogs don’t have a top
notch signal-caller in camp. Why else
would Richt and quarterbacks coach
Mike Bobo take so long to make a deci
sion? It’s unlikely that all three are so
outstanding that victory is probable no
matter who lines up under center.
Maybe on Sept. 1, certainly not on
Sept. 8, when South Carolina comes to
town for potentially the biggest game of
the season.
Richt may be practicing a little
gamesmanship. He might really know
who will be his No. 1 quarterback and
doesn’t want to tip his hand until the
last minute.
The rookie head coach constantly
brings up the name of true freshman
D.J.Shockley. It’s my guess Shockley
will eventually become the starter, but
Richt is hesitant to throw him into the
fire at this point for fear of the “oh, no,
here comes another Quincy” moan from
the Bulldog Nation.
So, the guessing game continues.
One thing’s for sure. Whoever starts
against Arkansas State will share time
with at least one more player and there
is a distinct possibility the starter in the
opener might not enjoy such lofty status
against Carolina. And it could be
planned that way already.

The college football season opens
tonight when New Mexico State travels
to Louisville for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Millions will tune in simply because it
signifies the beginning of the 2001 cam
paign. Could be a good game.
But there are some other interesting
matchups coming over the weekend,
too.
On Saturday, TCU plays at Nebraska
at 1 p.m. while Virginia meets
Wisconsin at 2 p.m. Also, North
Carolina will be in Norman to battle
defending National Champion
Oklahoma Saturday night.
The Sooners will start former
Georgia freshman Nate Hybl at quarter
back. If Hybl were still in Athens, I’ll
bet Richt would be hedging on his
starter.
BYU and Tulane kick off at 4:30
p.m.
Sunday’s action features a pair of
games, one of which will draw national
interest as Georgia Tech and Syracuse
play in East Rutherford, N.J. You
already know Tech supposedly has it’s
best talent since the 1990 National
Championship squad. This Yellow
Jacket team is probably deeper than that
one was.
If coach George O’Leary’s group is
focused on Syracuse, they will win. If
they are already looking down the road
at Florida State, Goose Godsey better
have a career day.
