their addiction. “We shed a lot
of tears,” said McKenna.
McKenna and his staff can
be seen offering hugs and
reassuring touches. “I had a
guy come in and after the first
session he reached out to
shake my hand. I told him,
‘That’s the last time you’ll
shake my hand,”’ said
McKenna.
There are 30 men in the
program with many more
waiting for a slot.
“We get 25 phone calls a
day, not to mention 15 to 20 e
mails. Our Web site generates
between 25 and 30,000 hits
per month.”
The program has four
phases:
Orientation
Orientation is a seven-eight
week process, which begins
immediately following an
applicant’s successful comple
tion of the intake interview.
The counselors make evalua
tions to see if the man truly
wants help. At the end of ori
entation, the participant will
develop a personal contract in
which he states specifically
achievable goals he intends to
reach before leaving No
Longer Bound.
Alcohol and Drug
Regeneration
This second phase consists
of a six-ten week intensive
study in the mental, emotional
and physical aspect of addic
tion. This is followed by a
study of the treatment of drug
and alcohol addiction. The
final portion addresses recov-

ery and aftercare.
Inner Healing
In this third phase, each
man learns that God cannot
change his present condition
unless he is willing to let go of
the past. He learns that for
giveness is the key to mental
health. The programs
Christian teachings stress the
availability of forgiveness
from God.
Discipleship Training
In this fourth phase, each
man learns that Christianity is
a walk of faith and expectation
that God will guide, direct and
protect him. In this class, men
learn to apply what they have
gained while in the program.
They become flock leaders
and help to lead others within
the program.
No Longer Bound also has
started an additional program
called Servant Leadership
Training, which presently
involves six men.
McKenna says the pro
grams appear to be successful.
He points to his statistics
showing that 53 percent of the
graduates have remained free
of drugs and alcohol after five
years. The national average is
around 10 percent.
There is no published fee
schedule for the program,
however, the participants are
expected to pay for the 10-
month care and housing.
Many of the participants exe
cute payment agreements to
begin after they graduate.
McKenna said that no one is
turned away because of their
inability to pay.
The program receives addi

The program generates
additional income through a
vehicle donation program. The
facility has a three-bay
mechanic shop to make
repairs to cars. The vehicles
which are mechanically sound
are offered for sale at a lot on
Atlanta Highway in
Cumming.
The organization also
grows bedding plants for use
in landscaping. Most of the
plants are sold at wholesale,
while one greenhouse is dedi
cated to retail sales.
