How to develop a garden for berries; the tricks to planting potatoes
By Shay Smith
For the Forsyth County News
Q. I want to develop a
modified woodland garden
using native plants such as
false Solomon’s seal, jack-in
the-pulpit, and spicebush, all
of which have berries. I have
tried shallowly planting these
berries but had a scanty yield.
Can the berries be used for
propagation? Should bare
seeds be planted directly or
started in trays first?
A. Ripe berries can be used
for propagation; however, do
not plant the entire fruit.
Berries, and their seed, are ripe

From Staff Reports
It’s a special occasion
when a child's work of art
finds it’s way off the refrigera
tor door and into a profession
al exhibit with a grown-up
artist.
That’s exactly what hap
pened to 44 Sharon
Elementary School students
when the Sawnee Art
Association (SAA) invited
them to display their work
alongside acrylic painter Alice
Goodman in the Featured
Artists Exhibit at the Sawnee
Cultural Arts Center.
A special reception was
held to celebrate the opening
of the exhibit, which is open to
the public Monday-Friday.
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
through Feb. 27.
Ms. Goodman was recog
nized for her long experience
in the art and publishing
industries and for her captivat
ing images of the north
Georgia mountains.

Q. I would like to grow
some potatoes this year, but
don’t have much experience
gardening. Could you give me
some advice?
A. When buying or ordering
seed potatoes, be sure to pur
chase certified grade and plant
them within a few days of pur-
FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Sunday, February 1,2004 I
chase. They are not really
seeds, but potato tubers that
have been selected for growing.
Do you want to grow early
or maincrop potatoes? Do you
want baking/roasting or boil
ing/frying/salad potatoes? Red
skinned potatoes (also known
as new potatoes) are early and
have an incomparable flavor
when eaten the day of harvest.
Because potatoes take up so
much garden space, some peo
ple prefer to only grow early
potatoes and use that space later
for cabbage or broccoli.
Once you receive your seed
potatoes, use a sharp knife to
cut the tubers into pieces with
at least one “eye” on each
piece. Plant them in early
spring in an open, sunny posi
tion in fertile, slightly acidic
soil. They should be spaced
about 12” apart, 4”deep, and in
rows about 18” apart. If a frost
is forecasted after you have the
potatoes planted, be sure to
cover them.
Once they are about 12” tall,
cover them with a continuous
mound of soil. This ensures that
they will grow protected from
sunlight, which causes “green
ing” of the tubers.
