were killed or injured as they
slept. Many of the injured
suffered fractured pelvises
and severely crushed broken
limbs. Entire walls and roofs
of the homes imploded and
crushed the household occu
pants.
“As a physician, you go
into doctor-mode and ignore
the human suffering side of it
and look after the injuries.
When I was flying back and
the lights were out in the
plane, I began thinking about
it and that’s when I broke
down. I was crying like a
baby on that plane,” said
Hogan. As he showed photos
taken during the visit and
recalled the circumstances,
his eyes welled up with tears.
He played a videotape
taken during the visit which
showed persons who had lost
family members mournfully
crying and wailing as they
surveyed the site where the
tragedy had occurred.
He said that the medical
facilities were primitive.
“Here, if we were going to
fix a broken extremity, we
would have four or five dif
ferent techniques we could
use. There, they were were
reduced to just one. They
would have to do major sur
gery for something that we
would treat differently,” he
said.
The physician said that
because of the limited facili
ties and use of invasive sur
gery, he predicts that many of
the people will incur infec
tions from their treatment.
“In the hospital, when I
made rounds with the resi
dents, they had to go to the
families and retrieve the x
rays. The hospital does not
keep the x-ray,” he said,
adding that patients were
housed in a ward of six peo
ple.
Often, there would be six
to 12 family member sur
rounding the bedside.
“There was absolutely no
privacy," he said.

town will be a lengthy
process.
“I estimate that it will be
50 years before it is rebuilt.
Some people think it could
take 100 years. Certainly, to
rebuild that town they have to
clear the ground and start
from scratch. Those people
didn’t have money. Opium
was a major problem in the
town. One lady told us that
90 percent of the people were
either buyers, users, or
addicts.”
Hogan said that many of
the people he saw in the hos
pitals were addicted to opium
and that family members
would bring the drug into the
hospital for the addicted
patients. “If they didn’t, they
would go into withdrawal,”
he said.
Another surprise for the
Cumming physician was the
lack of linens in the hospital.
Family members brought
sheets and blankets from
home to be used by their hos
pitalized relatives.
Hogan’s group stayed in
Kerman, the nearest major
city to Bam. He said that hos
pital facilities there were
much better, but were heavily
overloaded with earthquake
victims.
The humanitarian group
carried more than.2o boxes of
medical supplies, including
antibiotics, pain medications
and orthopedic supplies. In
addition, Hogan took extra
clothing which he gave to the
earthquake victims.
He estimated that the four
members of the mission gave
away a total of SBO,OOO in
cash and supplies during the
trip.
The group also met with
Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian
lawyer and human rights
activist. Ebadi, the 2003 win
ner of the Nobel Peace Prize,
has been an advocate for

in Iran.
