Family fitness: There are many ways to keep everyone fit
For many of us, finding
time to exercise is a
challenge. The experts
tell us we should exercise at
least .-*0 minutes every day.
Weight training is also
important especially for
women over 30, since that is
when our bones begin losing
mass.
All you have to do is look
around you to know we need
to get our children on board
with this as well.
Obesity in children is on
the rise and lack of exercise
(coupled with diets that con
sist of fast food and refined
sugar) is a key component to
the problem.
Is there any good news
here? Why not try turning
your family into your own
exercise and diet support
group? Here are some ideas
to get you motivated.
What men know and we shouldn’t
Do women condescend to
men about things that
are in our traditional
line of expertise? I don’t
think so.
I have never seen a
woman belittle a man whc
tried to sew a button on his
shirt. That calls for bragging,
not sneering.
We're smart enough to
encourage such brave inge
nuity because if it continues
then it’s less work for us.
Brilliant strategy.
Men see these things dif
ferently. They tend to hate
any invasion into what they
consider to be their territo
ries of masculine expertise
such as mechanical engineer
ing, sports and muscles.
Women will try a hand at
anything whether it fits our
traditional role or not.
If there’s a job to be done
and no one else to do it,
we'll do our best to do it.
Yet. I have never had a man
brag on me for cleaning out
gutters or pressure washing
the driveway. 1 personally
think that deserves a great
deal of praise.
Instead, my experience
has always been that it is
carefully, precisely explained
to me what I did wrong
while performing these
admirable tasks. And, it is
always done in a voice that
stops just short-of mockery
with a little sarcastic snort
attached to the end.
This rankles me almost as
much as my mother com
menting unkindly and repeat
edly on the length of my
skirts.
It happened at the gym
the other day when a guy,
who I have never seen in a
decade of faithfulness there,
sauntered over to where I
was working out. I knew
what was coming. I could
tell by the way he curled his
upper lip and cocked his
head.
He then authoritatively
explained what I was doing
wrong. “Is that the way you
do it?" I asked when he had
finished. He poked out his
meager chest and nodded
proudly. “I’m glad you told
me,” I replied, eyeing the

* Hiking: Just like biking,
heading out for a hike is a
great way to get some fresh
air, exercise and enjoy being
together.
Bring along some informa
tive nature books and learn to
identify trees, leaves, birds,
etc. Bring a picnic lunch
along in a backpack.
* Swimming: We are lucky
to live in an area that has
access to several indoor pools
and it will not be long
until outdoor pools will be
open for use.
For children, swim teams
offer a great opportunity for
exercise and comraderie. For
adults, do not just sit and
watch your children swim,
can thread it without looking
at the instruction booklet. I'll

It happened when I was in
Los Angeles in the reception
area of Fox Sports. I sat down
next to a guy who was watch
ing “Best Damn Sports
Show”. Period. "Why is that
on now?" I asked, glancing at
the clock.
The guy then launched
into a belittling tirade in
which he explained that the
show was all about sports
which he was certain I knew
nothing about.
When he finished. I quiet
ly smoothed my skirt then
looked him straight in the
eye. "I'm familiar with it." I
replied. "I'm tonight’s guest ”
Red-faced, he jumped up
from his chair and rushed out.
On the other hand. I'm all

me.

can also be fun.
* Go to the Park: Forsyth

things for families to do. Load

one of our many parks and

your sporting skills. Do not
forget the cooler loaded with

* Participate in a family
fun run: Check the Internet

There are many that are
specifically for families. Do
not worry about actually run

* Get moving after dinner:
Most diet experts tell us not to
eat too late in the evening. In
fact, most nutritionists recom
mend we eat three to four
hours before bedtime.
And though you might not
want to take an aerobics class
after dinner, some form of
mild exercise is a great idea
definitely preferable to lying
on the couch watching televi
sion all night.
Taking a walk after dinner
is a great way to get moving,
but if the weather is particu
larly nasty, try these ideas
instead: Play indoor hide and
seek-all kids love this game,
play charades, turn up the
stereo and dance to the beat
(video the spectacle for later
entertainment value), put on
a play together, take turns
putting on puppet shows.
The idea is to get moving!
