By Adlen Robinson
For The Forsyth County News
Skyler Day has already
basked in the spotlight of a
movie premiere at Atlanta's
Fox Theatre.
Tonight, the Forsyth
County actress will take a
bow in front of her hometown
friends and fans.
Day, 12, is the star of
“The Adventures of Ociee
Nash." The film was first
shown last June to audiences
at the Fox. The film had a
regional release in mid-
February and opens at
Movies 400 on Atlanta
Highway today.
The movie's screenplay
comes from the book “A
Flower Blooms on Charlotte
Street," by Milam McGraw
Propst.
The story is about a young
girl who lives with her father
and two brothers in rural
Mississippi in 1898. Ociee’s
mother died the previous year
and her father is concerned
about his daughter’s less than
feminine nature.
In an interview for a story
which appeared in the
Forsyth County News just
prior to the Atlanta premiere,
the young actress reflected on
her character.
"She is a complete
tomboy.” said Day. laughing.
"Which is the complete oppo
site of me."
Ociee’s father, played by
veteran actor Keith Carradine.
sends his daughter to
Asheville. N.C.. to live with
her proper aunt, played by
Mare Winningham. On the
long train ride from
Mississippi to Asheville.
Ociee encounters numerous
noteworthy people of the
time, including President
William McKinley and
Wilbur Wright, played by
"Trading Spaces” star Ty
Pennington. Each encounter

fuels the story of the little
girl’s numerous adventures.
Once Ociee is in
Asheville, her aunt is
appalled by just how bad her
niece's manners really are.
“There is a funny scene
when I have really bad table
manners.” laughed Day.
The movie, which will be
rated "G", has something for
everybody humor, drama,
sadness and plenty of adven
ture.
Day has appeared in
national television commer
cials, print ads, and radio
voiceovers, but this is her first
movie. Day won the leading
role after grueling auditions
over a three-month period.
The movie itself took only
six weeks to film. Many of
the scenes were filmed in
Atlanta and Griffin. Ga., as
well as locations in
Tennessee.
Nobody ever said being an
actress was easy, especially if
you happen to be the star.
Sometimes Day was on the
movie set for as long as 16
hours at a time. One scene
was particularly exhausting;
Day had to run through a
field with her loyal dog.
Woofer. She had to do it
repeatedly until the director
felt the shot was perfect.
"She must have run 12
miles during the filming of
that scene," said Day’s moth
er, Kelly. The young actress
just beamed and said. "It was
all worth it.”
Day said her favorite part
of the actual movie making
was meeting the cast and
crew Day’s parents. Kelly
and David, have been with
Skyler every step of the way.
"I was extremely con
cerned about Skyler doing the
movie." her father said.
"But after we met the
director. Kristen McGary. I
felt much better she was
so dow n to earth "
Skyler’s mother agreed.
"The cast and crew were
all protective of Skyler. and 1
was there every day as well,”
she said.
Skyler’s twin brother,
Dalton, and her 15-year old
sister, Savannah, were extras
in the movie, so the whole
family spent many hours
together on the set. Because
of their busy schedules, the
Day children are home
schooled by their mother.
While the movie was
being filmed, in addition to
having their mother as a
teacher, a certified teacher
was always available to help
with lessons.
The author of the book
from which the screenplay
was taken, has written a
sequel “Ociee on Her
Own.” Day is hopeful the
sequel to the movie will fol
low.
The young actress will be
on hand at the theater from 6-
8 p.m. tonight and on
Saturday afternoon from 1-5
p.m. Tonight’s shows will be
at 7:15 and 9:25 p.m.

Meth dealer
attempts to
escape jail
By Colby Jones
Staff Writer
Arthur Stephen Bowden Jr. apparently
doesn’t want to go to prison.
While awaiting trans

Bowden escaped from I
the Forsyth County Jail
on Monday.
"His freedom lasted a |
total of 10 minutes," |
Sheriff Ted Paxton said " j ’
on Wednesday. *
According to the
sheriff, at the time of the
jail break at 11:15 a.m. B ° Wden
Bowden was in a medical waiting room
inside the jail where inmates are moved to
receive their medication.
When two trustees, non-violent offend
ers allowed to perform jobs outside the
jail, and a supervisor at the sheriff’s office
attempted to move a desk into the jail from
the outside. Bowden saw an opportunity at
freedom. An officer and another inmate in
the medical waiting area apparently were
not paying attention to Bowden at the
time.
He bolted. An alarm sounded and the
trustees helped deputies track Bowden to a
nearby wooded area before the tracking
canine arrived to give chase. Bowden was
found laying down in a ditch. He had
removed his orange jumpsuit, dressed only
in a T-shirt and his underwear.
He was taken back into custody with
out a confrontation.
Bowden. 40. of Roswell now faces an
additional felony charge for escape and
detention officers are keeping him in a
maximum security cell at the county jail.
Bowden is awaiting transfer by the
Georgia Department of Corrections after
being sentenced last week by Forsyth
County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey
Bagley to serve 15 years in prison and 15
years on probation for trafficking metham
phetamine.
Bowden's escape prompted the agency
to revise security procedures to guard
against future escapes, according to
Paxton.
