Arnold said.
For the past five years the

However, the accreditation

Arnold said to receive full

2002 to another part of the

and additional mining activi

The new site was about half
a mile from Windermere; other
communities were located as
close as 800 feet from the gun

safety precautions, including a
25-foot berm surrounding the
site, were in place to prevent
stray bullets.
Even so, the sheriff said
Tuesday there will be no more
training exercises conducted at
the Lafarge site due primari

"The complaints that we
received about the noise have
risen to the level to where we
want to be a good neighbor.”
said the sheriff. “I dare say we
have ceased using that site as a
firing range.”
Deputies visited Mineo and
told her the shooting would
stop. Though it has been weeks
since she has heard gunfire.
Mineo said she is worried that
target practice may resume at
some point.
“|The deputies] said the
shooting would be ceased for
the time being,” Mineo said.
Paxton is serving his first
term as the Forsyth County

Windermere resident Brant
Meadows said he petitioned the
sheriff for months to stop firing
at the gun range to no avail. He
said he became especially con
cerned after learning the direc

Taylor said.
A firing range is essential
to maintain professional stan
dards and shooting proficien
cies, the sheriff said. Those
standards include hitting targets
in low light, he said. “We also
have to do some shooting at low
lighting,” Paxton said. “It is
required that there is a certain
amount of training in low light

“The bottom line [about the

he said. “Given the continued

it had become a nuisance from

"We are looking for an
