The D £ A T H of W E R T E R.
“ By the late Dr. LADD .
AND fay, did Charlotte's hand these pistols give ?
Come ye dear pledges, sacred to my love—
Since given by her, ’twould be a crime to live—
No; come ye pistols j all your death I prove.
But firft one kiss, for there did Charlotte touch,
Ye sacred relicks, now are ye molt dear j
Tho* o’er your deed will Charlotte sorrow much,
And even Albert drop a pitying tear.
May heaven forgive the unconfider’d deed !
It gave me paftions, nor could I controul :
But if, poor Werter y ’tis a crime to bleed,
!The God of Heaven have mercy on thy foul 1
Charlotte I go !—my pistols have their load :
My last, my dying thoughts are fix’d on you J
I go ! I go thro* death’s untrodden road ;
Once, and forever, Charlotte —O ! Adieu !
