Jan. 18. In the month of Oaober last, died at Glafcow
■Dr. Alexander Wilson, Profeffor of pradical astronomy and
■Dbferver in the umverfity of that city. Few men have dif
■covered more.ingenuity and genius than Dr. Wilson which

The canine madness raged in Grenada, about the firft of
■ November last, with as much violence as at Montego-Bay
■in 1783 ; this induced the Magistrates to offer a reward of
■ fix bits, for the deftruftion of every dog found in the streets,
■ which operated to the almost extin<3ion of the barking race
■in that part of the World; Several persons bitten had died
■ raving mad.

Augujla, Friday, the td of February, 178 7.
The House proceeded to take up the Report of the Com
mittee consisting of Mr. Joseph Haberlham, Mr. Osborne,
Mr. Walton, Mr. Baldwin, and Mr. O'Bryen, appointed to
take into consideration the state of the Republic: Which was
unanimoujly agreed to, and is as follows:
That it is necessary to recommend to the citizens of this
state to make the following alterations in the constitution :
Firfi. That the boundaries of the counties Ihould not
make a part of the constitution.
Secondly. That the number of reprefehtatives from the
different counties be diminirtied, and that the mode of ap
pointing the Executive be altered.
Thirdly, That the time and manner of holding the courts
and administering justice, be left to be regulated by law.
Rejoined, That the Speaker do rtgn the said recommenda
tion, and that one thotifand copies thereof be printed, and
transmitted to the several counties for the information of the
inhabitants of this state.
Rejoined, That when this House adjourns, it fliall be to
meet again on the firft Tuefday in July next.

Major Benjamin Filhbourn is chofeff a Representative for
the county of Chathani, in the room of Major John Haber
iham, who declined taking his feat.
On Thursday the nth ult. was run for near Charleston,
the second Jockey Club Purse of 11 2 guineas, by Major Harle
fton’s justice, Mr. Nathaniel Farr’s Adventurer, Colonel
Wufliiugton’s Conoftogo, and Mr. Edwards’s Eclipse. Co
noftogo and Adventurer were distanced the firft heat, and Ju
stice the second. Eclipse carried the purse.
And next day the third purse of 75 guineas Was run for by
Colonel Hampton’s Columbia, Colonel Walhington’s Orono
co, Mr. Benjamin Waring’s Pompey, and Mr. John Haig’s
Milkmaid. Columbia carried the purse.
The General Assembly of the commonwealth of Virginia
have appointed George Washington, Patrick Henry, Edmond
Randolph, John Blair, James Madison, George Mason, and
George Wythe, Efqrs. deputies to a convention proposed to
be held in the city of Philadelphia in May next, for the pur
pose of reviling the federal constitution.
A Bill, to repeal the Aft intitled, An Aa to reftria foreign
vessels to certain ports within the commonwealth of Virginia,
wasrejeaed by the House of Delegates, on the nth of Dec.
last. Ayes 35 —Noes 69.
The General Court of MaiTachufetts, having taken intofe
rious consideration the present deplorable state of their coun
try, in confequcncc of the extravagance, indolence, and dis
sipation, which has pervaded the whole continent, have re
commended it to the citizens of that commonwealth, by ex
ample and advice, to difeourage the importation and use of

fordrefs and falfe refinement, to mfpirc a due regard to our
own manufafturcs, and to encourage and promote industry
and a^ C,at,on Was accor dingly entered into
and ligned by his Excellency Governor Bowdoin, and all the
eading men in that commonwealth; and it is not doubted
but this laudable example will meet with the hearty support
of every real friend to this country, and that similar aflbeia
nous will be adopted throughout the United States. We
may then expert to redeem our credit., our character, and
our national consequence ; but so long as we indulge the ar
tifices that are supported under the influence of our dark and
dciigmng enemies, we thall destroy the liberties we have
gained with so much honor, involve our country in ruin, and
leave poftenty to fuffer for our inattention to their fafety and
