franjlatio* of an ITALIAN SONNET,
On a Marble Statue of M O S E S.
' The Workmanjbip by MICHAEL ANGELO.
WHOSE ia that form, of vast gigantic moult),
That warms with living fire yon breath
ing (tone,
In which, with wonder fix’d, my eyes behold,
The noblest works of finilh’d art outdone ?
Say, who is he, whose lips alive and, warm,
So prompt and ready forth to (peak ippear,
That all enchanted with the wond’rous charm,
I seem e'en now the Sowing founds to hear ?
• .
The form augult is Molts ; well I know
His beard's thick honours, which in waves to fair
Were wont adown his holy bread to flow,
And the two rays that round his temples glare.
Such was his form, when from the sacred height
,Ot Sinai* s top the favour'd leader came,
yVhilft from the eternal preface radiant bright
Illum'd his beamy brow with heavenly flame.
Such he appear’d, when on the defart vast,
He march’d untir'd, nor at the talk repin’d ;
Such when the Sea’S unfathom’d depths he pafs’d,
And then the path flupendous clos’d behind.
His port sublime, was at that aweful hour,
Grand as the majesty we here behold ;
Whilst Pharaon s heart, fteel'd by Pride’s hard’n*
ing power,
Was (till unmov'd, and as this marble, cold.
