BENNINGTON, (Vermont) Dec. 3.
By a gentleman of veracity from Canada,
we have obtained the following particulars of
a late inhuman murder perpetrated in those
parts, viz. One James Gale, who com
manded a plundering boat on Long Island, in
the late war, had lately redded in Canada,
and sustained the character of an idle facetious
gambfcr. Reduced by extravagance, he was
lately taking a tour to the weftern country in
search of plunder, where he unfortunately
fell in with a Mr. Street, of Farmington, in
Connecticut, who had delivered by contract
a number of cattle to a gentleman at N iagara,
and received about 6001. York currency in
cafli. During Mr. Street’s flay at that place,
from his benevolence and Mr. Gale’s ad
drels and neceflitous circumstances, they had
become so intimate, as occasioned Mr. Street
not only to make known his business to Gale,
but repeatedly to pay his expences. The
morning Mr Street left the Falls at Niagara
he had rode but a small way before he over
took Gale, with a bridle in his hand and a
comrade with him. Mr. Street bid Gale
good by, who alked him if he was going
home. Being answered in the affirmative, I
am looking for my horse, said he, and I’ll go
to the Great Spring with yon, for it is as
probable he is gone that way as any other.
Mr. Street accepted it very kindly, and rode
on sociably converting to the spring. Gale
then said, well I can go no further ; Mr.
Street replied, I am sorry, but we will not
part with dry lips ; he immediately demount
ed, took from his portmanteau a bottle of
spirits, and a cup from his pocket, handed his
horse to Gale’s comrade, and Hooped to dip
up fomc water rom the spring. At that in-
Hant Gale drew his tomahawk, and struck
him dead by repeating his blow. He then
robbed him of his money, plundered his port
manteau, and tied up his clothes in his hand
kerchief, which was marked with J. G. the
initials of his name, and hid them under a
log. Mr. Street’s body he conveyed a small
distance into a bufli, and covered him with
brulh; the horse he took into the bulhes and
killed him.
Some time after the murder a number of
Indians Hopped at the spring, and were
alarmed at the unusual feent. After search
ing a little while they found the body of Mr.
Street, and his clothes. The circumstance
of the handkerchief being marked with the
initials of Gale’s name, who was Hill at Nia
gara, as was his comrade, with some other
c rcumHances, occasioned them to be appre
hended, and committed to prison. Our in
formant further fays, that Gale’s comrade has
made a full confefiion, and that they were
both coufined in irons, in the goal at Quebcck,
When he left Canada.

Fatal effe&s §/ Charcoal*
Oft Saturday sight last the citizens of New*

of charcoal, when kindled in a close room,
ordered a pot of such coals for the cabin, just
as he was going to retire to his rest, and

were found in a languishing condition, and
the Captain and negroe embraced in the
cold arms of death. On this discovery a
jury of Inquest was summoned, whose ver
dict was, that the death of tnofe unhappy
persons was effected by the fixed date of the

It is said that the two persons who sur

A correfpbndent observes, he wis very
much surprised to fee so very (hort a proces
sion onThurfday last, at the proclaiming and
publifiiing the ratification and adoption of
the plan of government, which is of so so
lemn and important a concern to all of us.
The delinquency of the officers of (our pre
sent) government on this occasion is easily
accounted for; but that so few militia officers
as 17, and such a small number of other ci
tizens, (hould think it worth their attention,
is very strange. The gentlemen of the Uni
versity were as scarce on this occasion as any
others. Our friends in Convention and Coun
cil deserved credit for their exertions; they
distributed invitations and copies of the or
der of the proceflion all round, and did their
utmost to procure as refpeftable a company on
that day as the occasion merited. And the
common people appeared to be as inattentive
as the rest. A batteau Was carried on a cart
in the evening, through the back streets, dres
sed with several flags, (an emblem of our
future commerce) and, uotwithftahding the
hearty sailors who conducled it used all their
honest endeavours, by huzzaing and playing
on a fiddle, to attraft the admiration, yet it
was remarkable, that the people did no* seem
well pleased with it; none but a few chil
dren followed. With such aftonilhing indif
ference is this great fubjedt treated.
A correspondent hopes that the unanimous
ratification of the new federal government by
the date of New-Jc f?y will fatisfy the friends
of the minority of Pennsylvania, that there
is no despotism in the constitution. The yeo
manry of New-jersey love liberty. Nearly
every field in that state has been dyed with the
blood of its militia, (bed in thecaufe of free
dom, and nearly every farm in the state has
been plundered by the Britilh army during
the late war. Certainly a people who have
facrificed so much for liberty could not have
furr ndered it by an unanimous vote. No com
mercial influence, no terror of an applauding
gallery, no legal sophistry, had any weight
in the C,sveution of that patriotic state in
producing u?e ratification. The men who
pretend to love liberty more than the citizens
of New-jersey, mull (hew that they have
done half as much in ite defence before they
