M‘Giit was taken at the Flat Ford, in Effing
ham county, by Capt, Cone and a party of
tfie militia, and secured in Refter** fort. He'
has been about seven or eight weeks from the
Bahama lilands, and- landed in Ealt-Florida,
or thtf southern parts in this state.

By a Gentleman lately from the na
tion, we are informed, that the Indians are
much difpoted for peace, having had full fa
tisfaCtion for their supposed injuries. That
they had heard of a proposed treaty by order
ftnee which the warriors were
directed by theif chiefs tg fuipend any further
hottilities on our frontiers.
This Gentleman further adds, that he met
Mr. Whitefield with the Talk Irom theCorn
miffioners to the Head Men and Warriors of
the nation within a few days journey of the
upper towns, where he would be well receiv
ed. In the couiTe of a fortnight he may be
expected back.
On Sunday morning last, a little after day
break, the house belonging :o General Pickens,
opposite to this place, being (truck with light
ning, took fire although it was ftfrnifhed wiih
a conductor* and Was totally confjmeJ. —
But that this inttance may not be Quoted to
support an argument in favor of the inutility
of that so necessary an appendage to every
house in fourherly it is only neceffi
, ry to observe, that one hundred Hand of arms
were stored in that pa* t of the garret where
the lightning firft struck, which was the op
posite end of the house to that where the con
iluftor flood.
On the 13th of February last leave was
given for bringing i« a bill into the Britilh
House of Commons, in conference of the
following repott from the Committee on the
state of the American commerce, viz. “ That
it is the opinion of this committee, that a dh
ty of two (hillings and fix-pcnce sterling per
ton be laid upon every ftiip or veflel belong
ing to the inhabitants of the United States of
America, coining to the ill and called Turks
Island, in ballast, and not otherwise, for the
purpole of being there laden with fait.”
