tog of Mr.’Carrington, Mr. Wadfwocth,
ivir. Irvine, Mr. Baldwin, and Mr. Ha
milton, to whom were referred sundry
letters and papers from the Governor of

Refolded , That the Executives of Vir
ginia and Penr.fjrlvania be requeded to
give orders to the militia of their reflec
tive frontiers to hold themselves in readi-
to unjte with the federal troops in
such operations as the Governor of the
weflern territory may judge neceflary for
thC protection of the inhabitants : and that,
on the application of the said Governor,
the said Executives be requelled to give
orders that parts of their laid militia, not
exceeding one thousand for Virginia, and
rive hundred for Pennsylvania, be embo
died, and take such portions as the com
manding officer of the federal troops (hall
direct, for aCting in conjunction with the
said federal troops in defending and pro
tecting the frontiers againd any hofiiiities
commenced or meditated by the Indians,
and in making such expeditions, (lionld
they continue hostile, as the said Gover
nor (hall direct, for repelling such holfili
tics: That the militia which Until he
called \into the aftual service of the United
States for the defence of the frontier in
habitants, or the purposes of any expedi
tion, (hall be paid, supported. and equip
ped, by the Bates from which the fame
may be rcfpeCtively called, and that such
Bate be credited for the fame, out of the
exilting specie requisitions, so far as such
expenditures (hall be for pay and rations,
which are to be computed on the federal
cdabliffiments for fnmlar service; pro
vided that no charge for such service (hall
be valid unless supported by mullers made
by an officer of the federal troops, agree
ably to the orders of the commanding of
ficer.
And, on the question to agree to this
j-efolution, it was rcfolved in the affirma
tive.
That the said Governor be informed,
that the foregoing resolution having been
taken by Congress, on an apprehension
that a war may be inevitable, lie is tocon
fider it as their earned desire, that all ho-
Bile measures may be avoided unless ren
dered iudifpenfable to the fafety and pro
tection of the citizens of the United States.
Refolded, That the Commissioners for
Indian Treaties be indruCted, in the far
ther purchases of ludian rights to lands,
to extend the fame as far as to them (hall
appear for the advantage of the United
States, upon confideringall circumdanCes,
any former indruClions preferibing certain
limits notwithdanding.

James Carnigie, a native of Scotland, of
a very fliort illness.
