POET R Y.
A CHRISTMAS ODE.
Firjl Shepherd •
AT this unwonted hour, behold
What strikes my wond’rjng foul with
fear f
How all yon east is ftrea’d with gold !
As if the op’oing morn was near!
Second Shepherd.
I mark it I—now the streams unite !
One pillar now of moving light!
3V£y foul too (hakes !—it finlts—it dies!
See 1 through the air the vision flies !
Third Shepherd .
Heav’n shield us !—lo ! ’tis just at hand!
Some strange event impends !
O’er head direst, it seems to stand!
And now the blaze defeeuds!
GABRIEL.
Ye Shepherds ! all your fears resign !
I come, not arm’d with wrath divme !
But fraught with heav'nly love f
The news, the welcome news I bring,
Sounds high from ev’ry sacred firing
Thro’ all yon realms above !
I come! (and *tis ablest employ)
I come the meftenger of joy i
Go! publidi what I (ing.
Earth is no more a feene forlorn !
This night a promis’d Christ i» born !
Your Saviour and your King !
At Bethle’m, in a manger lies
The swaddled babe ! let raptures rife
Round this terrestrial ball!
The raptures catch from heart to heart!
’Jill all (hall feel, let all impart!
For (Thrift was born for all !
r
CHORUS of ANGELS.
Glory to God, in drains till now unknown,
From ev’ry glowing Seraph round his throne ! I
Peace to this globe 1 all worlds admire the
plan
Os HeavVs free, vast Benevolence to man.
ANECDOTE.
A Number of felf christened philosophers
in France, who had adopted Voltaird s
Atheiftical principles, proposed to ereft a
statue to that Poet’s memory. The scheme
was in great forwardnefs, when an Englilh
gentleman defeated it,by introducing the fol
lowing into all the faftiionable rutile at Paris:
Infeription for an intended Statue </* Voltaire.
.Behold If dtaire / deferring of a (tone j
Who in poetry was great,
In hiftory little !
Still less in philofopbyj
And in religion* • I
Nothing at all.
His wit was acme,
His judgment precipitate, -
f His diftionefty extreme.
Loose women smiled upon him,
The half learned applauded him,
And the profane patronized him.
Though he spared neither God nor mac ,
A junto of Atheists,
Who call themselves Philosophers,
Scraped fame money together,
And railed this Statue,
To his memory.
