A Pleasant Incident.
Yesterday afternoon, about 3 o’clock,
a dog with a tin kettle tied to his wag
ging machinery was observed on Austin
avenue. The dog did not appear to be
much alarmed at the kettle any more
than the average politician is when he
is nominated to a lucrative office. He
took it as a matter of course. There
was a tall, seedy looking young man
'standing near a crowd on the sidewalk.
He looked intently at the dog for a mo
ment, then said i
“By thunder ’ that is Banker
Thompson’s little daughter’s lost dog
he has offered SSO for.’
Immed a ely live different in n, with
their mouths sticking out like mucilage
bottles, trying to whistle, and saying:
“That’s a good little doggy !” ad
vanced on the astonished animal. One
very respectable looking gentleman,
with a silk hat on, tried to detain .the
animal by his handle, but the dog got
mixed up with his legs, and down he
came like a pile driver. Several hack
men who were subsequently arrested for
leaving their teim-s, joined in the can
vass, and when the procession turned
the corner, with the dog and attach
ment twenty feet in advance, almost
every class of our cosmopolitan popula
tion had its delegate in the pageant.
'1 hen it was that the sleek young man
doubled himself up, and went behind a
door until his emotion had passed over.

The St‘ward’s Piinishm uil.
Duffield told a story the other night
that on board a Peninsular and Oriental
steamer returning from India, a chief
steward of ambitious mind was supposed
to have chetished a passion for one of
the lady passengers, and with a bold
ness begotten of first love, he first
dressed himself in plain clothes to look
like a gentleman, and then, under cover
of the evening shades, mingle with the
upper ten on the quarter deck, with
some vague and vain hope that he
might thus find an opportunity to ad
vance his suit. He was not detected by
any of the numerous passengers, but the
under stewards twigged him, and re
sented as an insult to themselves this en
dcavor to assert a social superiority.
They therefore secretly arranged to hold
a court-martial upon him; he was form
ally arrested, and solemnly brought be
fore a tribunal of stewards; evidence
was adduced clearly proving his guilt;
and as the prisoner had nothing to say,
he was sentenced to receive two dozen
st.okes with a bar of his own yellow
soap. The sentence was duly carried
out, and the chief steward looked ex
ceedingly sheepish the following morn
ing; but although he knew in his heart
that the captain and officers were aware
of all thit had occurred, he was. too
guilty or too bashful to moke any com
plaint in regard to the indignity he had
suffered. —ljondon Society.
