singers and music seemed to be obliv

!Fnd of ih© Libei Case.
The case of criminal libel against
James A. Sykes, was tried in the
Superior Court on Wednesday last
and resulted in his conviction. The
charge against Mr. Sykes was that
as editor ot the Phoenix he publish
ed Peter Donegal, a letter carrier, as
a viper, a loafer, a hybrid and a dis
grace io the po-tal service. Sykes
acknowledged that he was the pub
lisher. but claimed through his
counsel that the article was not li
belous. The jury thought otherwise
and a line of .S2OO or six months
imprisonment was imposed by the
Judge. The fine was paid and the
defendant released from custody.
'I om Fogarty who committed the

upon.
Horrible Attempt of a Man to
Kill Ru Wife and Child.
At an early hour on Sunday
morning last William Emery whilst
in a state of frenzy caused by drink
and domestic troubles assaulted his'
wife and child whilst they were:
asleep in bed by striking both of
them over the head with the flat of I
an axe, and proceeded to police
headquartersand surrendered him
self. He stated atthe barracks that
his reason for the crime was that his
wife had determined to leave him,
because he had ordered her sister to
’leave the house, the latter woman
being the cause of their troubles.
The victims have been in critical
condition up to the time we go to
press. Emery was committed to
jail to await the result of his mur
derous assault, when the grand jury
will take action in the case.
Four Years Hard Labor
James Wyattt, the bigamist received

daughter of onrfofour well known <it -

married her, the original Mrs. Wyatt
being above terra firma in full posses
sion of her rights as such. The culprit
was arrested in .Atlanta and brought
back for trial. He pleaded not guilty
when arraigned but upon a survey of’
the witness s present he concluded to
plead guilty. Hard labor in the peni

convict ample opportunity 10 reflect on
the evils of his ways.
