A METROPOLITAN PASTOR.
MINISTER WHO PREACHES
WEEKLY TO $600,000,000.
Re%. Dr. Paxton, Who Has New
York’s Leading Millionaires
Among His Congregation.
A New York letter to the Pittsburg
Dispatch. says: A great deal is written
about the preachers of the metropolis,
and particularly about those who, like
Talmage, keep their names constantly
before the public by means of books, lec
tures and published sermons. But there
are some very noteworthy clergymen,
who draw enormous audiences and pos
sess great ability, who rarely are heard
of in print, although known up and
down the city. Unquestionably the Rev.
Dr. John R. Paxton stands at the
head of the ministry in New York. Even
Dr. John Hall and Dr. Morgan R. Dix
do not equal Paxton in eloquence, origi
nality and remarkable independence of
thought.
To begin with, Paxton’s congregation
contains more wealth at the present time
than any other church in the United
States. The mere fact that within a ra
dius of half a dozen pews on the middle
aisle sit Jay Gould, Russell Sage, Heber
R. Bishop and Henry M. Flagler is of it
self sufficient to prove the assertion.
Flagler is one of the chief directors of
the Standard Oil Company. He sits
pretty well up the aisle, while back by
the door, in fact within one pew of the
door, modestly sits S. C. T. Dodd, the
resident attorney of the Standard and a
lawyer who is said to know more about
corporation practice than any man in
the nation. I could mention a score of
very rich men in the church, embracing
merchants, lawyers, brokersand the like,
but it will suffice to remark that the ag
gregate wealth of the congregation is
over $600,000,000.
While millionaires and aristocratic so
ciety people sit down stairs, the galler
ies are crowded morning and evening
with hundreds of young men who are
simply bound up in Paxton.
Dr. Paxton’s Church is known as the
West Presbyterian, and is situated on
West Forty-second street, about midway
between Fifth and Sixth avenues. It is
a very handsome structure, particularly
in the interior. The galleries are novel
in their construction, having been altered
about eighteen months ago. Instead of
being arranged in pews, there are boxes
all around the three sides. The boxes
are rented, as they are in theatres, so
that a large family can have an entire
box, or a small family can have part of a
box. A good many young men rent a
single seat in one of the compartments.
The boxes are very comfortable, contain
ing easy chairs, book racks, and are lav
ishly and richly upholstered. The boxes
rise in tiers, one above the other, so as to
afford a good view of the house.
The church was always a large and
prosperous one, but when the venerable
pastor and hymist, Rev. Dr. Thomas S.
Hastings, resigned and the eloquent
Paxton was called, the church increased
in size, affluence and influence until its
contributions and congregations are en
ormous. Less than a year ago Dr. Pax
ton, at the close of his sermon, without
giving any previous notice, asked for
money for the building of a new chapel
among the poorer classes on Tenth ave
nue and Sixty-fifth street. The baskets
were passed and $21,000 was raised in a
few moments. This is a sample of the
charity of the church and the influence
wrought by an appeal from the pastor.
The church will seat, over 1,500, but
there is scarcely a Sunday that there are
not 2,000 people present at the services.
Chairs are placed in front of the pulpit,
camp chairs are distributed in the galler
ies, and yet people stand in the aisles
find by the doors, and ladies sit on the
pulpit steps.
It might be well to mention how the
. millionaires, and especially Jay Gould,
came to become members of the church.
It is Paxton’s magnetism and his practi
,'cal, every-day common sense that drew
them. Gould never went to church
regularly before. He had a pew for his
in a prominent Episcopal church,
but rarely attended himself. Hisyoung
est daughter, Helen Gould, first came to
Paxton’s church. She was with a friend
and admired the preacher very much.
Finally she became a frequent attendant
and then joined the church one Sabbath
morning, receiving a very happy tribute
from Paxton as to her Christian virtues
and sweet life. Since then, although
\ery young, she has been made superin
tendent of one of the large missions con
nected with the church, and is said to
epend a great deal of time and money
among the poor. She promises to be
come one of the great women benefactors
of the metropolis before many years
elapse. Helen’s enthusiasm over Paxton
induced her father to go and hear him.
'Paxton never spares the millionaire ami
the great corporation, and, oddly enough,
all the millionaires and corporation
managers in his congregation like his
criticisms. Russell Sage is reputed to
have said that he got more good points
from Paxton as to the way in which rail
roads should be decently and honorably
conducted than he ever got from meet
ings of directors. At any rare, Gould
was delighted. He had his son George
go' with him one evening, and George
also was charmed.
' Dr. Paxton’s salary is $12,000 a year,
the largest received by any metropolitan
Dr. John Hall, of the Fifth
Avenue Presbyterian Church, is under
stood to come next. He gets SIO,OOO in
g<’ld, that being the price stipulated
when he was induced to leave his large
church in Dublin about fifteen years ago.
John R. Paxton is a Southerner by
birth, and still retains a strong Southern
accent that is viry noticeable in all his
discourses,

The following words, in praise of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription as a remedy for those delicate diseases and weak
nesses peculiar to women, must be of interest to every sufferer from such maladies. They are fair samples of the spontaneous
expressions with which thousands give utterance to their sense of gratitude for the inestimable boon of health which has been
restored to them by the use of this world-famed medicine.
John E. Segar, of Afillenbeck, Va., writes:
<W I rt * k wife had been suffering for two or three
SP JL W years with female weakness, and had paid
t ■ . out one hundred dollars to physicians with-
IHROWM fIWAY out relief. She took Dr. Pierce’s Favorite

cians during the three years they had been practicing upon her.”

The ‘Favorite Prescription’ is the greatest earthly boon to us
poor suffering women.”
Many times women call on their family physicians, suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia, another from heart disease,
another from liver or kidney disease, another from nervous exhaustion or prostration, another with pain here or there, and in
this way they all present alike to themselves and their easy-going and indifferent, or over-busy doctor, separate and distinct diseases;
for which he prescribes his pills and potions, assuming them to be such, When, in reality, they are all only symptoms caused by some
womb disorder. The physician, ignorant of the cause of suffering, encourages his practice until large bills are made. The suffering
•atient gets no better, out probably worse by reason of the delay, wrong treatment and consequent complications. A proper medicine.
Tike Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription, directed to the cause would have entirely removed the disease, thereby dispelfing all those
distressing symptoms, and instituting comfort instead of prolonged misery.
Mrs. E. F. Morgan, of A’o. 71 Lexington St.,
I Boston, Mass., says: “Five years ago I
iiv,»H«nu i was a dreadful sufferer from uterine troubles.
FAILED 8 Having exhausted the skill of three phy
| sicians. I was completely discouraged, and so
■ ll,ll ■ wea ]£ J could with difficulty cross the room
alone. I began taking Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription and
using the local treatment recommended in his ‘Common Sense
Medical Adviser.’ I commenced to improve at once. In three
months I was perfectly cured, and have had no trouble since. I
wrote a letter to my family paper, briefly mentioning how my
health had been restored, and offering to send the full particulars
to any one writing me for them, and, enclosing a stamped-en
wlcpe for reply. I have received over four hundred letters.
In reply, I have described my case and the treatment used,
and have earnestly advised them to ‘do likewise.’ From a great
many I have received second letters of thanks, stating that they
had commenced the use of ‘ Favorite Prescription,’ had sent the
$1.50 required for the ‘ Medical Adviser,’ and had applied the
local treatment so fully and plainly laid down therein, and were
much better already.”
THE OUTGROWTH OF A VAST EXPERIENCE.
The treatment of many thousands of cases
of those chronic weaknesses and distressing
ailments peculiar to females, at the Invalids’
Hotel ana Surgical institute, Buffalo, N. Y.,
has afforded a vast experience in nicely
adapting and thoroughly testing remedies \
for the cure of woman's peculiar maladies.
Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription i
is the outgrowth, or result, of this great
and valuable experience. Ttmusands of
testimonials, received from uaßents and
from physicians who have tested it in the
more aggravated and obstinate eases which
had baffled their skill, prove it to be the
most wonderful remedy ever devised for :
the rx lief and cure of suffering women, it
is not recommended as a “ cure-all,” but 1
as a most perfect Specific for woman’s
