necessary to be presented to the
Convention, which will give us an
j intelligent idea of what will have to
i be done to put a stop to the a.?ts
of injustice being perpetrated on
our race. Let us move in this mat
ter promptly, feeling certain that
the steps taken will meet the cordi
al approval of all good citizens of
both races.
I We do not believe that it will be
necessary to h *ve a delegated repre

it would entail loss and trouble to
Our planting friends, but the repre

j best men in the several counties
who would likely take an interest

| cause of justice to themselves, and
their fellow man.
The Herald of United Churches

JAMES CARTER COWARDLY
•LAIN NY JOHN BURNS,
At Brunswick.
James M. Carter one of Bruns
wick’s best known colored citizens
was killed at his barber shop in
! that place on Monday afternoon by
a white man named John Burns. It
seems that the man Burns claimed
that a sum of money was taken
from his pocket while he was in a
bath room in the barber shop and
held Carter responsible for the same
and out of this grew the trouble.
From the evidence taken at the
coroner’s inqnest it eeems that
Burns bad been following Carter
jup demanding a restitution of the
money he had aleged as stolen from
him, and Carter insisted on some
proof that he had the money when
he entered his shop, and that
Burns finally struck Carter in the
fa ;e, and attemp'ed to use his pistol
at the same time, when Ca ter
closed with him and Burin fired the
fatal shot the ball taking effect just
above the right, eve of his victim
who expired immediately. From the
evidence it is u doobtedlv premed
itated and deliber te murder
Mr. Carter was well known in
this city where he has a large num
ber of friends who were greatlv
shocked when the news < ame of his
tragic end. He whs a member of
the Masonic Grand Lodge and
greatlv liked. He was noted for his
genial and hospitable qualities. Hie
deceased leaves a wife, who is
ancient?, end several small chil
dren. The afflicted widow and
family have the deepest sympathy
of all who knew thein at the ter
rible calamity which has befallen
them.
The funeral rook place on Tues
day afternoon and was aih nded by
a large concourse of people.
It c mnot be too constantly bnrne in
mind that the pJjticd and religious
equality of the N- »io to the white
race has no relation whatever to rhe
social status of either As a freeman
and a member of Christ the colored
man is entitled to recognition and
privilege in S'ate and Church, but so
cial privilege and position bel -ng to no
man, as human rights; It is the pre
rogative of the individual, of the family
of the race to bestow or withold these
