Dr. Leonard Woolsey Bacon ti e
late pas'or <»• the Independent Pr-sby
lerian chord), preached at 'he Congre
gational Church on Tuesday evening
last The announcement that the not. d
divine would preach, attracted a v»-rv
large audience «4 colored people. The
Rev. Doctor took his text from St,
Matthew, 6:- 34: ‘ Take therefore no
thought for the morrow; f«»r the morrow
shall take th >ught for the things of
itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil
thereof.’’ The Doctor showed his hear
ers the danger of taking the words of
the text literally and construing and
perverting them in a manner which was
never intended, and warned them ot
the evil consequences of improvidence
That the divine teachings did not mean
that no provision should be made for
the fu’ure; nor the earnings of D-day
should be squandered in gratifying use
less, unnecessary and pernicious desires
while iu health and st eugih and n->t
»>r vide for the day ot adv-rsity and be
deprived of all comforts when age and
infirmity shall come.
He denounced in the strongest terms
the parties guilty of the monstrous
wrecking of the Freedman’s B ink- It
was a cruel bio r to a people who had
shown the great quility of being provid
ent by saving their earnings with tl.e
hope of a b-tter future, and led them to
di-trust and discouragements. He ex
horted his hearers to have faith in the
promises of their Saviour and act well
their par' in life, doing what is right
<nd have no fear of the result.
The D »ctor though suffering from a
severe cold wis earnest and eloquent
throughout, the discourse which lasted
three-fourths of an hour, and wis
listened to with the greatest attentiou
by the people present.
