I BEFORE IT IS BORN.
Startling Statements of General
Interest!
Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, on being
: asked when the training of a child should
begin, replied: “A hundred years before it
is born.”
Are wj to infer from this that this genera
tion is responsible for the condition of the
race a hundred years from now ’
Is this wonderful generation the natural
result of the proper diet and medicines of a
hundred years ago/
It is conceded in other lands t hat most of
the wonderful discoveries of the world in
this century have come from this country.
Our ancestors were roared in log cabins, and
suffered hardships and trials.
But they lived and enjoyed health to a ripe
Old age. The women of those days would
endure hardship without apparent fatigue
that would startle those of the present age.
Why was it’
One of the proprietors of the popular rem
edy known as Warner’s safe cure, has been
. faithfully investigating the cause, and has
' called to his aid scientists us well as medical
men, impressing ufwn them the fact that
there cannot lx> an effect without a cause
This investigation disclosed the fact that in
the olden times simple remedies were admin
istered, compounded of herbs and roots, which
were gather'd and stored in the lofts of the
log cabins, and when sickness came on, these
remedies from nature’s laboratory were used
with the best effects,
What were these remedies? What, ware
they used for? After untiring and diligent
search they have obtained the formulas so
generally used for various disorders.
Now the question is, how will the olden
time preparations affect the jioople of this
age, who have Ixeen treatad, under modern
medical schools and codes, with poisonoua
aud injurious drugs. This L-st has liven care
fully pursued, until they are eonvin cdthat
the preparations they now call Warners
Log Cabin Rem (lies are what our much
abused systems require.
Among them is what is known na War
ner’s Log Cabin Sarsaparill,*. and they
frankly announce that they do not consider
the Sarsaparilla of so much value in itself a.-
it is in the combination of the various in
gradients which together work marvelous!’,
upon the system. They also have prepara
tions for other diseases, such as “War
ner’s Log Cabin Cough and Consumption
Remedy,” “lx»g Cabin Hops and Buchu
Remedy” Warner’s Log Cabin Scalpine” for
the hair. They have great confidence that
they have a cure for the cdtnmon disease of
catarrh, which they give the name of “Log
Cabin Rose Cream.” Also a ‘‘Log Cabin
Plaster,” which they are confident will sup
plant all others, and a Liver Pill, to lie used
separately or in connection with the other
remedies.
We hope that the public will not bo disap
pointed in these remedies but will reap a
benefit from the investigations, and that, the
proprietors will not he embarrass ’d in their
introduction by dealers trying to substitute
remedies that have been so familiar to the
shelves of our druggists. This line of reme
dies will be used instead of others. Insist
upon your druggist getting them for you if
he hasn’t them yet in stock, and we feel
confident that these new remedies will re
ceive approbation at our readers’ hands, as
the founders have used every care in their
preparation.
o
Marriage by Proxy.
Marriage by proxy, or, as it is called,
“marriage by the glove,” is common in
Holland, and is caused by the tact that
many of the eligible young men, after
having finished their education in the
schools of the fatherland, depart for
Dutch India to engage in some lucrative
commercial enterprise or to accept a
position in the colonial service. The
scarcity of marriageable white women in
that country induces the would bo hus
band to write to a friend in Holland,
enclosing his wish for a wife. The
friend selects a willing young lady, gen
erally with a substantial dot, and other
wise conforming closely to the specifica
tions of the letter. A photograph of the
favored one is enclosed in the return
epistle. After the lapse of a few months,
a soiled left-hand glove, with the power
of attorney, is received from the far
away bachelor. The friend in Holland
marries the selected bride in precisely
the same manner as if he wore the
actual groom, and the young wife de
parts in the next India mail steamer to
• bring happiness ton lonely one in the far
feast. A marriage of this description is
as binding as if the bridegroom were
present, and is never repudiated. If
either party to the glove marriage
should die before meeting in India, the
survivor would share the property of
the deceased in accordance with the
laws.
Female Beauty.
Prof. Hedom, the eminent German hy
gienist, declared in a recent lecture that
the nervousness of women is generally
owing to two defects nntvmia, caused
by the silly notion that a hearty appetite
is unfeminine, and fresh-air starvation,
accompanied by :t !ael< of exercise. To
their fondness for fresh air, their open
windows at night and their constant ex
ercise, he attributes the greater beauty
of English women. “The beauty of
German women,” he says, “lies in their
face, with its changing and amiable ex
pression. The beauty of the English lies
in their whole bo ly and in their health.’’
German women, he adds, are martyrs to
an unnatural state of civilization, and if
they would only imitate the English,
hysteria would diminish in frequency.
Au English Preacher.
Rev. Charles A. Berty, the probable
successor of Henry Ward Beecher in the
pulpit of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn,
N. ¥., is 35 years of age, and an eminent
representative of English Congregation
alism. From his church at Wolver
hampton he has organized a great mission
work among colliers and foundry men.
The following personal description is
given of him; “In person Mr. Berry is
slightly below the medium size, of wiry
frame, dark brown hair, dark mustache,
and full beard, cut close. His appear -
• ance indicates physical and intellectual
strength. In the pulpit his voice is
strong, clear and penetrating, aud his
manner both earmsw and pleasing.”

akould have two votes, whjlc the bach
alor» should have only one.
Not So Bad.
A story is going around in the French
papers about the czar of Russia. While
he was stopping recently in the Castle of
Fn densborg he was fond of taking little
walks in the neig djorhood. One day he
was accosted by a beggar woman with a
child in her arms. In pure Danish and
in the roughest manner possible he told
her to go away and be pretty quick about
it. The poor woman, terrified, started
off, but was followed by an officer.
“Herejmy good woman,’’said the officer,
as he put some pieces of gold into her
hand, “it is the czar who sends you this,
and he hopes that you will forgive his |
apparent rudeness of a moment ago. The I
fact is, he has just returned from a visit |
to his children, who have the scarlatina, i
and he was afraid that he might bring i
the contagion to your child if he allowed !
you to approach'his person.”

Every family in which books, magazines or
newspapers are read, and letters are written,
should have an English dictionary. How Ot
ten is a whole sentence made obscure because
the reader does not know or has forgotten the
meaning of some word or proper name. How
I often does a letter-writer hesitate over the
correct spelling of some word whose ortho
graphical construction has, for the moment,
escaped his memory. And how often do dis
putes arise over the proper pronun nation of
this or that word. All these difficulties could
lie settled in a moment by the possession of a
standard dictionary. Now, t’ e one great work
, which answers all requirements, and which is

WHAT

YOU?
Do you feel dull, languid, low-spirited, life

alternating with chilly sensations, sharp,
biting, transient pains here and there, cold
feet, drowsiness after meals, wakefulness, or
disturbed and unrefreshing sleep, constant,
indescribable feeling of dread, or of impend

If you have all, or any considerable number
of these symptoms, you are suffering from
that most common of American maladies—
Bilious Dyspepsia, or Torpid Liver, associated
with Dyspepsia, or Indigestion. The more
complicated your disease has itecome, the
greater the number and diversity of symp

Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery
will subdue it, if taken according to direc

cured, complications multiply and Consump

Rheumatism, Kidney Disease, or other grave
maladies are quite liable to set in and, sooner
or later, induce a fatal termination.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Dis

through that great blood-purifying organ,
cleanses the system of all blood-taints aud im

equally efficacious ir. acting upon the Kid

strengthening, and healing their diseases. As
an appetizing, restorative tonic, it promotes
digestion and nutrition, thereby building up
both flesh and strength. In malarial districts,
this wonderful medicine has gained great
celebrity in curing Never and Ague, Chills and
